Active landslide keeps part of Historic Columbia River Highway closed until repair can be done

The Historic Columbia River Highway will remain closed between Larch Mountain Road and Vista House until repairs can be made after March 11 landslide.

Closure is between Larch Mountain Road and Vista House

March 13, 2026

The Historic Columbia River Highway/U.S. 30 will remain closed after a landslide just east of Larch Mountain Road on Wednesday afternoon.

The slide area is still active because of the amount of water in the soil. With less rain forecast next week, we will be able to inspect the hillside, assess the damage, clear the debris and start repair work on the roadway and concrete guardrail. We will not have an estimate for when the highway can reopen until the hillside can be properly inspected as conditions improve.

The Portland Women’s Forum will remain accessible from the west side, and Vista House will be accessible from the east.

Suggested detours

  • Interstate 84 is the detour route for people traveling through the Columbia River Gorge.
  • Exit 22 at Corbett Hill Road and Exit 28 at Bridal Veil will remain open to access destinations along the Historic Highway.
  • To reach Vista House, travelers should use eastbound I-84 Exit 28 to Bridal Veil and travel west on the historic highway.
  • Visitors to Portland Women's Forum should take I-84 Exit 22 to Corbett Hill Road to access the forum.
