The Oregon deadline for removing studded tires has arrived

Tires

Beginning April 1, law enforcement officers can issue citations with a $165 fine to drivers with studded tires on their vehicles.

State law allows studded tires to be used in Oregon from Nov. 1 through March 31.

Drivers should use other types of traction tires or chains if extra traction is required after March 31 or postpone travel until conditions improve.

When planning for next winter, drivers can help prevent damage to Oregon’s roads by considering alternatives to studded tires. Research shows all-weather tires without studs do not cause any more damage than standard tires while providing better traction than studded tires on bare pavement.
For more information on Oregon’s law regarding traction tires and chains, visit the Oregon Chain Law website.

Walk+Roll to school for Earth Month

LookOut

Oregon Safe Routes celebrates the Earth every year in April. Kids can walk and roll to school all month long, or choose a specific day to celebrate.

Since this is a month-long event, drivers are reminded to stay alert and look out for kids by slowing down in school zones (20 mph or less). Kids can be unpredictable, often stepping into traffic from between parked cars or suddenly riding out into the street on bikes, scooters or skateboards. Drivers should scan both sides of the road and the sidewalks in residential areas and avoid distractions.

For more information and digital resources, visit the Oregon Safe Routes Walk+Roll for Earth Month webpage.

You can also find some great digital material in the Transportation Safety Office Bicycling, Pedestrian and Safe Routes Digital Toolkit.
