Travelers should prepare for construction delays on I-84 between Ainsworth State Park and Bonneville Dam starting in March as traffic is restricted to one lane in each direction until this fall. Both directions of traffic will share the westbound bridge over McCord Creek for about 4 months while crews work to remove and rebuild the eastbound bridge.
In summer through fall 2026, the eastbound and westbound bridges will be open but one lane in each direction will remain closed.
The Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail will also close for two months in 2026 with shuttle service for trail users between John B. Yeon and Toothrock Trailheads. Details about the shuttle are available on the project website.
Crews are beginning the first visible work in 2026 for interstate travelers as they begin replacing the eastbound bridge. Replacing the bridge will eliminate a “dip” in the road and increase safety, earthquake resilience and the lifespan of the highway. Over the last few months, crews have been working under the bridge to set up supports beneath the existing bridge. Over the next several months, crews will use large cranes to remove the existing eastbound bridge and install a new bridge in its place.

Travelers on I-84 can expect:
- Eastbound traffic to share the westbound bridge with one lane open in each direction until summer 2026.
- Around-the- clock single lane and shoulder closures on I-84 eastbound and westbound will continue at McCord Creek until fall 2026.
- The NE Frontage Rd on-ramp to eastbound I-84 at the Elowah Falls Trailhead parking lot remains closed during construction. Travelers accessing eastbound I-84 from NE Frontage Road must detour to the on-ramps at Ainsworth State Park (exit 35).
Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail users can expect:
- The Historic Highway State Trail to close for two months with shuttle service between John B. Yeon and Toothrock Trailheads. Details about the shuttle are available on the project website.
We will share more information and updates as work progresses.

The Historic Highway east of Multnomah Falls Lodge remains closed to all traffic, including bicycles and vehicles, until spring 2026 as crews continue restoration and repairs to the 100 year-old elevated highway structure.
Crews recently paved the viaduct and installed new supportive rebar beneath the road surface. The project will restore the structure and preserve its appearance with its original color and texture once complete.

While the east viaduct is closed between Multnomah Falls Lodge and Oneonta Trailhead:
- All traffic, including bicycles and vehicles, is prohibited between Multnomah Falls and the Oneonta Trailhead parking lot.
- Westbound vehicles on the Historic Highway east of Multnomah Falls will be turned around at the Oneonta Trailhead, about 2 miles east of Multnomah Falls. Parking is limited at the Oneonta Trailhead.
- Eastbound vehicles will be turned around on the east side of Multnomah Falls Lodge.
- Public transit and private buses are available to Multnomah Falls. Visit RideCatBus.org or ReadySetGOrge.com to find more information.
- The I-84 lot at Exit 31 remains open. Real-time traffic impacts and cameras showing parking availability at the Exit 31 lot are available at TripCheck.com.
- As with all construction, the schedule is subject to change. The latest information including detour maps are posted on TripCheck.com and on the project website.

Construction to connect the 0.7 mile gap of the Historic Highway State Trail between Viento State Park and Mitchell Point is underway. Crews have established the construction site limits and staged materials in the area.
The temporary pedestrian-only trail in place since late 2024 is not available during construction.
Once complete in late 2026, the State Trail will provide nearly 10 miles of continuous car-free ADA-accessible trail for people walking, biking and rolling in the Columbia River Gorge between Wyeth State Park and the Mitchell Point Tunnel.
Trail users can expect:
- The Historic Highway State Trail to close about 2 miles east of Viento State Park during construction.
- Viento State Park and the Mitchell Point Tunnel will both remain open during construction. The Mitchell Point Tunnel parking lot (Exit 58) remains open for I-84 drivers.
I-84 travelers can expect:
- Periodic shoulder closures on I-84 east of Viento State Park.
You can read more about the state trail and the last remaining segments in our annual Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail Progress Report.
Culverts help prevent flooding and erosion, and we’re repairing them under I-84 between the Sandy River and Multnomah Falls. Construction is expected through spring 2026.
Culverts are pipes built beneath a highway or road to allow stormwater, streams and rivers to flow under the road surface to the other side. Repairs improve safety by managing stormwater and extending the life of the highway.
I-84 travelers can expect:
- Periodic single lane and shoulder closures between the Sandy River and Multnomah Falls.

We’re improving safety at 15 on and off-ramps on I-84 between downtown Portland and Hood River by installing or replacing lights and signs, and trimming overgrown vegetation as part of our All Roads Transportation Safety (ARTS) program. Construction will last until fall 2026.
 Map of the project area.
Travelers on I-84 between downtown Portland and Hood River can expect:
- Short-term daytime and nighttime single lane and shoulder closures at multiple ramps on I-84, with flaggers directing traffic.
- Temporary sidewalk and crosswalk closures with signed, pedestrian accessible detour routes.
For a list of work locations please visit the project website.
We’re creating a multiuse path along Jordan Road near the Sandy River Delta. The path will connect to the existing pedestrian and bicycle tunnel underneath I-84 with the Sandy River Delta recreational area, also known as Thousand Acres. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2026 and continue through late summer 2026.
View of the existing conditions where we will build a new multi-use path parallel to Jordan Road near I-84 at Exit 18.
During construction, travelers, including pedestrians and bicyclists can expect:
- No traffic impacts to I-84.
- Periodic single lane closures on Jordan Road north of I-84, with flaggers directing traffic as needed; expect some delays at the westbound I-84 exit ramp while flaggers are present.
- The pedestrian and bicycle tunnel underneath I-84 will remain open during Phase 1 construction on the path but will temporarily close during Phase 2. Watch for signage.
- Existing trails will remain open during construction.
- The parking lot for the Sandy River Delta recreational area will remain open.
Hazard tree removal estimated to take five days
The Historic Columbia River Highway/U.S. 30 will be closed during weekdays for up to five days starting in late February between Larch Mountain Road and Vista House for removal of hazardous trees from the December rainstorm.
During the closures, the Portland Women’s Forum will remain accessible from the west side, and Vista House will be accessible from the east. The highway will be open nights and weekends.
Detours
- Interstate 84 is the detour route for people traveling through the gorge.
- Exit 22 at Corbett Hill Road and Exit 28 at Bridal Veil will remain open to access destinations along the Historic Highway.
- To reach Vista House, travelers should use eastbound I-84 Exit 28 to Bridal Veil and travel west on the Historic Highway.
- Visitors to Portland Women's Forum should take I-84 Exit 22 to Corbett Hill Road to access the forum.
Road work schedules can change due to weather, so please visit Tripcheck.com for the latest information on road conditions before you travel.
More information on work scheduled in the coming months and beyond is available on our project website. Stay tuned for more email updates!
