We are installing a new sign structure spanning all lanes of I-205 on the West Linn side of the Abernethy Bridge and installing girders on the underside of the bridge in Oregon City. These both require two nighttime closures of the Abernethy Bridge and two nighttime closures of OR 99E in January.
As with any construction project, closure dates and timing are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen events. Please visit the project website for ongoing updates. Additional details for both closures are below.
Overnight closure of I-205 across the Abernethy Bridge on Jan. 16 and 17
There are two scheduled nighttime closures of I-205 across the Abernethy Bridge (between OR 99E and OR 43) Jan. 16 and 17. The overnight closure is to install the second of two sign structures on the bridge and remove the old one. The first sign structure was installed earlier this month.
Details:
- Overnight closure of I-205 in both directions across the Abernethy Bridge on Friday, Jan. 16 from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and Saturday, Jan. 17 from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- During the overnight closures, the following on-ramps will also close:
- OR 99E on-ramp to I-205 southbound.
- OR 43 on-ramp to I-205 northbound.
- Lane closures on I-205 in both directions before and after the nighttime full closure.
Local and Regional Detours
- Regional traffic will bypass I-205 in this section by using detours on OR 224, OR 99E and I-5.
- Local traffic can use the Arch Bridge to cross the river.

Overnight closure of OR 99E under I-205 Jan. 8 and 9
In order to install bridge girders on the underside of the Abernethy Bridge where it passes over OR 99E in Oregon City, OR 99E will close overnight for two nights.
Details:
- Overnight closure of OR 99E in Oregon City in both directions under the Abernethy Bridge on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Friday, Jan. 9 from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Expect increased congestion in Oregon City near I-205 during the work.
Detours
- Drivers will be detoured onto I-205 in order to bypass the closure.
- People walking and bicycling will experience short holds and flagging on OR 99E during the overnight closures but will be able to travel through with delays.

What is this project?
ODOT is upgrading the Abernethy Bridge, which spans the Willamette River between Oregon City and West Linn, to withstand a major earthquake. We are also improving safety by realigning on- and off-ramps near the bridge and building new bike and pedestrian routes. This work is expected to finish in late 2026.
Follow the progress live on the project construction cameras.
