Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

Winter Freeze

The national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign runs Dec. 10 through Jan. 1, 2026, with extra law enforcement patrols beginning Dec. 12.

This time of year, officers across Oregon will be watching for impaired drivers. If you’re celebrating with alcohol, plan a sober ride home before you go out.

Here’s how to stay safe this holiday season:

  • Plan ahead. Choose a sober driver or line up a rideshare, taxi or transit before the celebrations begin.
  • Stick to the plan. A designated driver should stay completely alcohol-free.
  • Don’t wait. Once you’ve been drinking, your judgment is already impaired.
  • Use a safe ride. If you can’t drive, call a friend, use a rideshare or take transit.
  • Look out for others. If a friend has been drinking, take their keys and help them find a sober ride.
  • Report impaired driving. If you see a suspected drunk driver, call 911 and be a good witness.

A sober ride is always the right choice—every trip, every time.

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week is Dec 1-5

OlderDriver2

Older adults make up a growing share of Oregon’s driving population, and normal changes in vision, reaction time and health can affect how we drive as we age. Starting conversations early can help older adults stay safe — and stay independent — on the road.

These conversations aren’t always easy, but they matter. Families and caregivers can play a key role by checking in, asking how an older driver feels about their abilities, and offering support when needed.

Some great resources to help start the conversation:

Know Before You Go: Oregon’s Chain and Traction Tire Laws

Chains

Winter weather can change fast, so make sure you know when chains or traction tires are required. In severe conditions, chains may be required on all vehicles—even those with AWD.

Quick tips:

  • Non-studded traction tires and chains offer strong winter grip without damaging the road.
  • Studded tires are legal Nov. 1–Mar. 31, but they wear down pavement and may not perform as well in many conditions.
  • Always check your owner’s manual to see which traction devices are safe for your vehicle.
  • Look for the mountain/snowflake symbol to know your traction tires meet winter standards.

Winter Weather Reminder from ODOT Crews

Plows Passing

As you travel this winter, remember passing a snowplow on the right is illegal and extremely dangerous. Snowplows have limited visibility and push snow and debris to the right — give them plenty of space so everyone can get where they’re going safely. A split-second decision to pass can put you, your passengers and our crews at serious risk.

Quick safety reminders:

  • Visit TripCheck.com for cameras, temperature, elevation and road updates. During severe storms, some cameras may go offline.
  • Watch message signs. They provide real-time information about conditions ahead.
  • Adjust your speed. Slow down on rain, mud, snow, ice or heavy-traffic days, and leave extra room to stop.
  • Improve visibility. Turn on your headlights and watch for people walking and biking.
  • Follow the basics: buckle up, stay focused and never drive impaired.

Let’s work together to keep roads safe this winter. Drive cautiously, and stay alert and sober.
