Winter resources available for news media

Oct. 24, 2025

SALEM — The forecast says that winter is just around the corner — several areas of the state could see snow this weekend. While we’re getting our people and our equipment ready, we thought this would be a good time to let you know of resources we have available to help reporters and newsrooms get winter ready as well.

On our Winter Travel Tips page, we have information about common questions we get in winter. In particular, we have a Winter Travel News Packet that has news stories on everything ranging from what to do if you hit black ice, ideas for what should be in your car’s emergency kit, parking in recreation areas, and how ODOT crews prioritize plowing. Other stories include:

  • A look inside ODOT’s winter storm toolbox.
  • Practice chaining up before you slip and slide.
  • Hazards after a storm.

Each story has a summary of key points, and additional information for a deeper drive. There are links to downloadable resources for b-roll, photos and graphics, and ideas for social media posts you can use when winter weather hits.

The packet includes a page with contact information for your local ODOT public information officer, links to our social media channels and information on how to sign up for Flash Alerts.
