Oct. 16, 2025

PORTLAND – Interstate 5 will close in both directions on four separate nights in November for installation of new RealTime signs.

The overnight closures will extend from the Ross Island Bridge to SW Terwilliger Boulevard, and the interstate will reopen at 5 a.m. the following mornings.

I-5 closure schedule

  • 11 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5.
  • 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, to 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7.
  • 11 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11.
  • 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, to 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14.

These on-ramps will also close during these nights:

Northbound

  • Terwilliger Boulevard
  • Multnomah Boulevard
  • Spring Garden Street
  • Huber Street

Southbound

  • Ramp from Interstate 405 south to I-5 south
  • Harbor Drive
  • Hood Avenue

Detours

Detours signs will be set up before each 11 p.m. closure using these routes:

  • Neighborhood traffic can detour using Barbur Boulevard.
  • Regional traffic detours bypass I-5 in this section by using Interstate 205 to Interstate 84 or U.S. 26 to OR 217.

Expect delays and use caution when traveling in the area during these four nights. Also, expect lane closures before and after the nighttime full closure as crews set up and clean up the work site.

Dates may change due to weather or other unforeseen events.

Project background

We are improving our RealTime system to make roads safer and help Oregonians get where they are going more efficiently by providing real-time traffic information to drivers.

The work includes installing RealTime Variable Advisory Speed (VAS) signs along a busy stretch of Interstate 5 south of downtown Portland from the Ross Island Bridge to Terwilliger Boulevard.

Work will finish in late 2025.
