Oregon 234 to close Oct. 2 near Eagle Point for extensive repairs

EAGLE POINT – Work to repair sinking pavement on Oregon 234 (Sams Valley Highway) near Eagle Point will close a half-mile section of the highway for about a month. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, Oregon 234 will be closed at all times between Modoc Road and Dodge Road.

Ground settling following winter storms is causing the roadway at milepost 15.1 to sink, requiring extensive reconstruction. Contractor Visar Construction will remove the road surface and excavate to an estimated depth of 20 to 30 feet before rebuilding the road. 

During the closure, a detour will be available using Dodge Road and Antioch Road. Travelers will also be able to take Antioch Road or Modoc Road south to Table Rock Road to connect to Oregon 140 and Oregon 62 in White City.

Expect congestion along the detour route and nearby roads. Use caution and factor in extra time for the detour. Through travelers are encouraged to use an alternate route to avoid the closure and detour area entirely.

After the full closure, travelers can expect single-lane closures with traffic control as crews finish the project. Work is expected to be completed by Nov. 15.

Since the sinking began, crews have continually provided temporary repairs while teams worked to design a permanent fix. The project was scheduled to begin in June, but geologists found additional voids in the ground deep beneath the road, requiring a more substantial project plan. 

Ahead of the closure, use caution and watch for sunken pavement. The area is currently marked with signs and traffic cones and has a reduced speed limit of 35 mph for safety.
