$25,000 grant to improve bike safety education for Oregon youth
In March, Oregon was one of just three states receiving a grant aimed at making biking safer for young people in underserved communities. In partnership with Thrive Umpqua’s Safe Routes to School program, ODOT will use the funds to purchase a fleet of 40 bicycles, along with helmets and safety materials.

Getting there safety
Oregon coast bound? Plan to drive and ride there safely!
As you head to the coast this summer, please remember to pass people bicycling with care – it's the law and a kindness that can save a life. Bicycling is great way for people to enjoy an Oregon summer, and when we all understand the rules, everyone can share the road safely.
Safe passing tips for drivers:
-
Slow down as you approach someone on a bicycle.
-
Give them plenty of room – enough to avoid contact even if they wobble or fall to the ground.
-
When it's safe you can use the oncoming lane to pass as long as no oncoming traffic is near (this includes crossing double yellow lines when it's safe to pass a person riding a bicycle).
-
Get back into your lane when the person on the bicycle is in your rear-view mirror. Be patient! If it's not safe to pass, just slow down and stay behind the person on the bike.
-
The person riding a bicycle may take the lane if they need to, especially on turns or if there is no shoulder to ride on.

Oregon Safe Routes to School Advisory Committee tours Eugene infrastructure
On May 30, the Oregon Safe Routes to School Advisory Committee took to two wheels in Eugene for a bicycle tour designed to provide firsthand insights into the city's infrastructure supporting Safe Routes to School initiatives. The tour's primary goal was to understand the impact of various funding sources on communities and how they contribute to creating safer and more accessible routes for students to walk and bike. This immersive experience offered committee members valuable context on the practical implementation of Safe Routes to School programs and highlighted the real-world effects of transportation funding on local infrastructure. A big thank you to the City of Eugene and the Eugene-Springfield Safe Routes to School regional team for hosting this insightful bike tour for the advisory committee!
We are listening!
We’re updating the Transportation Safety Action Plan and want to hear from professionals who plan, manage, or influence transportation systems in Oregon.
If you work in transportation planning, engineering, enforcement, advocacy, or policy — especially in a government agency or public-sector organization — your insights can help guide statewide strategies to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.
As part of our engagement and consultation efforts, we are hosting a virtual meeting, August 21, 2025, from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. The objectives of the meeting are to update you on the planning effort and seek input on transportation safety priorities to help shape the 2026 TSAP.
Please register for the meeting in advance.
In the meantime we want to hear from you, your insights can help guide statewide strategies to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes — please participate in an online survey by August 31, 2025.
