PORTLAND – There will be a 24/7 closure of the right lane on southbound Interstate 5 from 8 p.m. Friday, July 11, to 6 a.m. Monday, July 14, as we begin to install new RealTime signs.
This weekend we will build the sign structure foundations for new RealTime signs. The lane closure will cause congestion and delays on I-5 south.
Details:
- The right lane closure will be in place throughout the weekend from 8 p.m. Friday, July 11, to 6 a.m. Monday, July 14, on southbound I-5 from SW Corbett Avenue to SW Terwilliger Boulevard.
- All ramps will remain open.
- Expect delays and use caution when driving through the work zone.
Weekend lane closures on I-5 will repeat up to three more times in the coming weeks. We will share details when we have that information.

Background
We are improving our RealTime system to make roads safer and help Oregonians get where they are going more efficiently by providing real-time traffic information to drivers.
The work includes installing RealTime Variable Advisory Speed (VAS) signs along a busy stretch of Interstate 5 south of downtown Portland from the Ross Island Bridge to Terwilliger Boulevard.
Work will continue through fall 2025.

RealTime signs:
- Calculate and display advisory speeds based on conditions ahead using traffic sensors, weather sensors, and cameras along the roadway.
- Improve safety and traffic flow by reducing crashes and their associated delays.
- Help prevent rear-end crashes by warning drivers of slowdowns ahead.
- Give drivers advance notice about speed changes ahead due to current conditions so they can make real time decisions.
