Expect delays on OR 203-A and OR 237-A in Union County for chip seal starting July 7

LA GRANDE – Starting July 7, we will be chip-sealing a 9-mile section of OR 203-A and a 10-mile section of OR 237-A in Union County. The work is expected to be completed around July 11. All dates are dependent on weather conditions and other factors that may impact the project.

  • OR 203-A (La-Grande-Baker Highway): From Exit 265 westbound off-ramp at milepost 6, to east of Godley Road at milepost 15.
  • OR 237-A (Cove Highway): From Conley Road at milepost 11, to north of Bryan Street in Union, at milepost 21.5.

Travelers should expect single-lane travel controlled by automatic flagging devices, pilot cars and delays of up to 20 minutes.

Bicycle riders should be prepared for traveling on rock chip covered highway sections behind a pilot car with no usable shoulders.

A chip seal involves spreading rock chips onto emulsified oil, then pressing the rocks in with rollers. Crews will sweep during chip seal applications. However, motorists should expect some loose gravel on the roadway for several days after this operation and are advised to slow down and allow extra space between vehicles. Fog seal will be applied in Cove directly after chip seal. Permanent striping is expected to take place later in the summer.

Chip seal applications help protect and extend the life of the existing roadway and provide a smooth ride.
