Expect delays on U.S. 26 in Grant County for chip seal starting July 7

June 25, 2025

JOHN DAY – Starting July 7, we will begin applying chip seal to a 40-mile section of U.S. 26 in Grant and Baker counties. The project will run between Austin Junction and Ironside. The work is expected to be completed around July 25. All dates are dependent on weather conditions and other factors that may impact the project.

Travelers should expect single-lane travel controlled by flaggers and pilot cars, reduced speeds, loose rock on the roadway, and delays of up to 20 minutes.

Bicycle riders should be prepared for traveling on rock chip covered highway sections behind a pilot car with no usable shoulders.

A chip seal involves spreading rock chips onto emulsified oil, then pressing the rocks in with rollers. Crews will sweep chip seal applications Tuesday through Friday each week, from early morning to mid-day. Motorists should expect some loose gravel on the roadway for several days after this operation and are advised to slow down and allow extra space between vehicles. Fog seal is scheduled for the end of July/early August. Permanent striping is expected to take place mid-late August.

Chip seal applications help protect and extend the life of the existing roadway and provide a smooth ride.

RANCHERS, FARMERS, PROPERTY OWNERS: Please keep farm equipment off the impacted highway sections during and up to two days after the chip seal. Adjust irrigation pivots and lawn sprinklers to keep water off the roadway. If you have plans for moving livestock on these highway sections, please contact ODOT Chip Seal Coordinator Zackary Wyllie at 541-620-2673, or zackary.wyllie@odot.oregon.gov.
