EAGLE POINT – Work to repair a portion of Oregon 234 (Sams Valley Highway) near Eagle Point will close a portion of the highway for about a week. Beginning Wednesday, June 25, OR 234 will be closed at all hours between Modoc Road and Dodge Road. Ground settling following winter storms is causing the roadway at milepost 15.1 to sink, requiring extensive reconstruction.
During the closure, a detour will be available using Dodge Road and Antioch Road. Travelers will also be able to take Antioch Road or Modoc Road south to Table Rock Road to connect to OR 140 and OR 62 in White City.
Expect congestion along the detour route and nearby roads. Use caution and factor extra travel time for the detour. Through travelers are encouraged to use an alternate route to avoid the closure and detour area entirely.
Following the full closure, travelers may see single-lane closures with traffic control as crews finish the project. Work is expected to be completed by Wednesday, July 2.
Ahead of the closure, use caution and watch for sunken pavement. The area is currently marked with signs and traffic cones and has a reduced speed limit of 35 mph for safety.
The roadway began sinking earlier this year after severe winter storms. Crews have continually provided temporary repairs while teams worked to design a permanent fix.
Geologists found voids in the ground deep beneath the road. To repair the road, crews must remove the pavement and excavate to an estimated depth of 20 to 30 feet. The material will be replaced, then crews will repave the road.
