Rough pavement on Oregon 42

The area of Oregon 42 west of Coquille was last paved in 2007. The road surface is cracked and developing potholes in several areas, including this spot near the Coaledo weigh station. ODOT and prime contractor Knife River Materials plan to pave a seven-mile section of Oregon 42 between Delmar Lane and Cedar Point Road this summer.

COQUILLE – Road construction will soon start on Oregon 42 between Coos Bay and Coquille.

This summer, contractors for ODOT plan to pave seven miles of highway, replace two dozen culverts and repair seven bridges between the U.S. 101 junction and Coquille.

Over the next two weeks, prime contractor Knife River Materials will mobilize equipment to the work zone and set up construction signs and traffic control devices.

Starting the week of June 15-21, the section of Oregon 42 between Davis Slough and Speedway Road (milepost 0.5-2.3) will be limited to a single lane in each direction for culvert work. Traffic will be shifted onto a temporary alignment and drivers should watch for construction signs and traffic control devices.

All construction on the $11.8 million project is scheduled for completion in fall 2026 but Knife River is moving forward with an ambitious plan to finish most or all work this year.

Bridge repairs: Most bridge construction will take place in the four-lane section of Oregon 42: Davis Slough (both directions, MP 0.6), Manning Gulch Slough (MP 2.8), Coos Bay Rail Line (MP 4.14), and Beaver Creek (both directions, MP 5.4). Drivers should watch for intermittent lane closures in these areas.

Nighttime detours: The Oregon 42 bridge over U.S. 101 will also be repaired. Construction is likely be scheduled later this summer and will require nighttime detours through the Davis Slough connector road. More details will be announced later.

New asphalt: Paving will include a grind/inlay from Delmar Lane to Cedar Point Road (MP 2.7-9.7). Most paving work will be scheduled at night. In areas with only two lanes, flaggers will provide traffic control.

Rumble strips: In the two-lane section of highway, from Fernwood Road to Cedar Point Road (MP 7.3-9.6), rumble strips will be added along the center line. These safety features help reduce lane departure crashes by causing sound and vibration when the tire of a vehicle crosses the yellow line.

Center turn lane: In the four-lane section of highway between Green Acres Lane and Fernwood Road (MP 3.3-7.3), ODOT will convert one travel lane into a center turn lane. Center turn lanes improve safety for drivers making left turns and help reduce the number of rear-end crashes.

To provide space for the turn lane, the new traffic pattern will include two eastbound and one westbound travel lane between Green Acres Road and the Coaledo Road, and one eastbound and two westbound travel lanes from Coaledo Road to Fernwood Road.
