Westbound Banfield to close most of Sunday for maintenance

I-84 will close between I-205 and I-5 for 16 hours starting at midnight Saturday night

June 3, 2025

PORTLAND – Westbound Interstate 84 will close between I-205 and I-5 at midnight Saturday night, June 7, and remain closed until 4 p.m. Sunday, June 8, for multiple agencies to do maintenance and graffiti cleanup. Eastbound I-84 will remain open.

The 16-hour highway closure and shutdown of MAX Light Rail and its power lines will allow Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and TriMet crews to work in locations that are unsafe when there is vehicle and train traffic, and high-voltage power. In this partnership with PBOT and TriMet, ODOT will also use this closure to do some maintenance on the state highway right-of-way.

“We’re making the most out of this scheduled maintenance shutdown,” Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said. “City crews will use this chance for a very significant graffiti cleanup operation in one of our busiest transportation corridors. This joint effort is a testament to the partnership between the City of Portland, the State of Oregon, and our regional transportation agencies.”

PBOT and TriMet welcomed the closure to do some graffiti cleanup and other maintenance, as well as work on the NE 82nd Avenue MAX Station Improvement Project. The MAX Station work will include powering down a section of the MAX Blue, Green and Red lines along I-84, allowing access to normally electrified areas.

Cooperation among the agencies is crucial to create a safe work zone. PBOT owns and maintains eight overpasses that span I-84 that generally have three bridge pier walls each, placed very close to railroad and light rail tracks.

ODOT also will use this opportunity to reach some locations that also need maintenance, including lighting systems, signs, storm damage, straightening barriers, replacing glare shielding, and doing some litter and graffiti cleanup.

ODOT closed both directions this section of I-84 on July 14, 2024, for about 12 hours of graffiti cleanup on state highway right-of-way. This Sunday’s work will close only the westbound lanes, and it is a partnership with Portland transportation agencies to do a variety of work on city-managed locations accessible from the interstate.

Travel tips:

  • Plan ahead. Prepare for the closure before this weekend by choosing your route if you plan to travel west in Portland between midnight Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
  • Plan extra travel time into your schedule for your alternate route.
  • Check TripCheck before you hit the road to make sure the closure is still on schedule. Weather and other factors can force us to reschedule the work.
  • It’s a good idea to visit TripCheck anytime you travel in Oregon for current road conditions and unplanned closures for crashes and other incidents.
  • MAX riders should plan for shuttle buses to replace train service between Oregon Convention Center and Gateway/NE 99th Transit Center.
