Safe Summer Driving Tips

Vehicles and pedestrians on a two-lane highway

Sunny days are back. Schools are out for summer vacation, and the travel season has begun. Below are a few safe-driving reminders to help keep everyone safe on the road. Whether you're driving, riding, rolling or walking, have fun and share the road safely.

Be Prepared

Stock your vehicle.

Even a well-maintained vehicle can break down, so it’s a good idea to put together an emergency roadside kit to carry in your vehicle. A cell phone tops the list. It lets you call for help anytime, anywhere.

Here are some recommended items to include:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • First aid kit, including tourniquet
  • Flashlight
  • Flares and a white flag
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Jack (and ground mat) for changing a tire
  • Maps or GPS device
  • Nonperishable food, drinking water, and medicines

Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones

Make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly buckled up using the right car seat, booster seat, or seat belt for their age and size.

Buckling up is one of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make. In 2024, the national seat belt use rate was 91.2%. In 2017, seat belts were estimated to have saved 14,955 lives.

Eyes on the Road Not on the Phone

Teens and Texting Message

Distracted Driving is Deadly

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 18 in the United States.

In 2023, 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving a teen passenger vehicle driver—and 822 of those killed were the teen drivers themselves.

This campaign reminds teens to drive like your friends’ lives depend on it and to always keep their eyes on the road, not on their phone.
