Demolition work allowed this girder to be removed from the I-205 Abernethy Bridge northbound deck.
OREGON CITY – Overnight deck demolition work to remove portions of the existing bridge deck in preparation for the eventual widening of the structure continued this week. After pausing for the weekend, work will resume Monday, April 28 through Friday, May 2 as progress continues.
Demolition work will continue through May. Work will happen from 9:30 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. each night. Some work will occur during the daytime, when it can be done safely.
-
What is being removed? Sections of the concrete barrier and concrete deck surface over OR 99E along northbound and southbound I-205 in preparation for girder removal. A large section of the northbound girder was removed April 13 (pictured above).
-
Why is the demolition being done now and where does it fit in the project? In order to install new steel girders and fittings to handle the upcoming widening on the Abernethy Bridge, some sections of the existing bridge deck need to be removed.
-
Why is demolition work happening at night? Night work is needed since some demolition will occur directly above OR 99E and other areas with active vehicle and pedestrian foot traffic during the day. These areas need to be closed for safety purposes when traffic volumes are low.
Follow the progress live on the project construction cameras.
We know the noise from construction work can be disruptive. Again, we appreciate your patience.

WEST LINN – Rock excavation work continues under the Abernethy Bridge on the West Linn side adjacent to OR 43.
This time-consuming work focuses on excavating channels through solid basalt to accommodate waterline installation to the proper depth. Approximately 250 feet of waterline pipe has been installed so far below the I-205 southbound onramp onto and across OR 43 during this effort.
The majority of the work will happen between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is a chance overnight excavation work may be necessary.

ODOT is upgrading the Abernethy Bridge, which spans the Willamette River between Oregon City and West Linn, to withstand a major earthquake and widening it to accommodate a future third travel lane. Additional improvements are being made to the bridge's adjacent on- and off-ramps to improve safety. This work is expected to be completed in 2026.
