Behind the scenes: Southbound I-5 over Commercial Street SE Bridge removal captured from all angles

Can you guess how long it took to remove this southbound I-5 bridge?
Last month, we removed the southbound I-5 over Commercial Street SE Bridge so we could build a new, wider one as part of the I-5 widening project between Kuebler Boulevard and Delaney Road. Removal began at 9 p.m. in the evening and crews worked until the bridge was gone! When you think of demolishing a bridge, how long would you guess it takes? Two hours? Eight hours? A few days or weeks?
The answer? It varies depending on many factors, such as time of day, location, traffic restrictions, size, etc. For this bridge, we estimated two nights of work, but our crew did an amazing job and removed the bridge in less than FIVE hours!
That's right – working quickly and safely, they started removing the bridge around 9 p.m. and finished about 1 a.m. Our crew then started clean up and had the road back open to traffic by 5 a.m.

About the work we've been doing
We've shifted both directions of I-5 traffic while we widen southbound to three lanes, build two soundwalls, remove and replace two bridges and pave both south and northbound lanes.
In general, you can expect:
- Crews working during the day and at night.
- Construction noise.
- Lane, shoulder and ramp closures as needed.

Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work! Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.
Remember that fines double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.
