Road Work Update |
|
|
We're working in several locations on U.S 30
|
There are multiple work zones in the corridor, including routine maintenance and crews working on projects.
Plan ahead – with so much work happening on U.S. 30, expect delays and give yourself extra time to make your trip. Work is weather dependent and our schedules may change. Learn more about the work below:

We're building a new culvert to create an easier passage for native migratory fish, like salmon and steelhead, some of which are listed as endangered species. Improving fish passage aligns with our commitments to the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. Right now, we're working on the south half of the culvert.
During construction, you can expect:
- Crews to work mostly during the day.
- Noise and delays.
- Lane closures with flaggers helping direct traffic as needed.

U.S. 30 in Rainier is a major tourist route from Portland to various beach towns year-round. It is also an important route for freight trucks. The highway was damaged and in need of repairs.
During construction, you can expect:
- Crews working Sunday night through Friday morning from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
- Occasional work to extend past 7 a.m. as needed.
- Single lane closures with pilot cars and flaggers helping direct traffic.
- Construction noise.
- Delays that may extend up to and over 20 minutes.

Whether you drive, ride, walk or roll, we are committed to providing the best accessibility possible to all people using our highways.
One of the ways we are doing this on OR 47 and U.S. 30 is by constructing ADA curb ramps in Rainier, Vernonia, Forest Grove and Gaston.
Why are ADA curb ramps important?
ADA curb ramps make it easier for people to move between the sidewalk and road. This can be helpful for those who have trouble stepping up and down high curbs. It's also helpful for people using wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, hand carts and bicycles.
By making curb ramps gently slope to the road, it improves accessibility and makes it easier for everyone to get around, whether they have a disability or not.
There are a lot of moving parts to a project in multiple communities. Our plan is to start work mid-September in Rainier. We'll then start work in Vernonia, Forest Grove and Gaston in 2025.
When construction starts, you can expect:
- Work happening mostly on weekdays during the daytime with occasional weekend work as needed.
- Shoulder and lane closures with flaggers helping direct traffic.
- Delays and construction noise.

We finished constructing improvements to U.S. 30 at milepost 48.89 and 50.17, making the area safer for drivers headed toward Rainier or trying to access the Lewis and Clark Bridge
This project:
- Installed a digital sign (variable message) at milepost 50.17 to warn eastbound U.S. 30 traffic of queues ahead.
- Installed traffic sensors for queue detection.
- Installed an overhead sign at milepost 48.89 to advise eastbound traffic that the right lane must exit.
- Added new signs and striping to the eastbound right lane approaching the exit for Washington SR 433 as right turn only.
- Did minor shoulder widening and installed guardrail at both sign locations.
We completed this project in July 2024. We've appreciated everyone's patience as our crews worked hard to make these upgrades quickly and safely.

Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work! Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.
Remember that fines double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.
