Southwest Oregon Construction Report for two weeks: August 18-31, 2024
The following report will cover two weeks, August 18-31, and includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are provided when the information is available.
Pedestrian routes: Where traffic is routed through or around a work zone, pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will also be provided routes through or around the work zone.

COOS COUNTY
OREGON 42 (Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway), MP 1-2, Culvert replacement project ($645,580)
This project will replace two culverts crossing Oregon 42, one at milepost 1.1 and the other at milepost 1.4. All work is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.
On Oregon 42, watch for lanes closures and traffic alignment changes between the U.S. 101 junction and milepost 3. Drivers can expect congestion and delays through the work zone.
Turning movements are restricted at the intersection of Oregon 42 and the Coos Bay Speedway. Only right turns in or out are allowed. Drivers are encouraged to observe construction signs and use alternate routes.
OREGON 42 (Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway), MP 23-30, Bridge repairs ($1.75 million)
This project will repair the Hoffman (Middle Fork Coquille River) Bridge at MP 23.4, the Endicott Creek Bridge at MP 26.7 and the Middle Fork Coquille River Bridge at MP 30.6. Work will include repairing the driving surface, paving the approaches and replacing expansion joints on all three bridges.
Watch for intermittent weekday lane closures with brief delays at each bridge. Most lane closures will take place during daytime hours with an occasional nighttime closure as needed. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. All work is scheduled to be completed by October.
COUNTY ROAD 89 (Sandy Creek Road), MP 2.7, Sandy Creek Bridge construction ($1.4 million)
This project will remove a culvert and replace it with a bridge at milepost 2.7 on Sandy Creek Road. Watch for daytime lane closures and equipment in the roadway. A temporary traffic signal and flaggers will provide traffic control.
OREGON 542 (Powers Highway/1st Street), MP 17.8-18.2, Safe Routes to School Grant Funds Project to the City of Powers ($984,000)
This project will add new curb and gutters, sidewalks, and intersection improvements including ADA ramps along Oregon 542 (1st Street) in the city limits between Alder Street and Fig Street.
Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures through the work zone. During sidewalk closures, alternate pedestrian routes will be signed and provided.
CURRY COUNTY
No construction impacts are expected on state highways in Curry County this week.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
OREGON 38 (Umpqua Highway), MP 38.1-50.3, Hancock Mountain to Drain paving ($4.3 million), website
This project will pave (grind/inlay) 12 miles of highway and repair four bridges between Elkton and Drain. From Monday to Friday, watch for daytime lane and shoulder closures through the work zone.
At milepost 44.2, watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures for slide repair work. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed 24-hours a day through Aug. 16.
Starting the week of August 19-21, paving work will begin between Hancock Mountain Road and Drain (MP 38.1-50.3). Traffic may be limited to a single lane on weekdays. Flaggers will provide traffic control. Delays will be under 20 minutes. Paving will likely continue 3-4 weeks.
OREGON 99 (Oakland-Shady Highway/NE 1st Street), Oakland Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website
This two-year project will replace the 1925 Oakland Bridge on Oregon 99 (NE 1st Street) at the north end of Oakland. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in the Melrose area west of Roseburg.
Drivers should watch for intermittent weekday lane closures through the work zone until construction is completed. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Expect brief delays.
MELROSE ROAD (Douglas County Road 167), Conn-Ford Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website
This two-year project will replace the 1964 Conn-Ford Bridge, which spans the south Umpqua River on Melrose Road about one mile west of Roseburg. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in Oakland.
Throughout August and September, watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures on Melrose Road. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. The work zone speed limit is 35 mph.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 211.9-212.8, Reedsport lane reconfiguration project ($570,000), website
Most work has been completed. The contractor will return to the work zone later this year to install poles and finish work on the flashing pedestrian beacon at the intersection of U.S. 101 at 20th Street.
JACKSON COUNTY
OREGON 66 (Green Springs Highway), MP 2-8, Ashland to Emigrant Lake pavement repairs
Crews will return over the following weeks to complete striping and other remaining work items. Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures.
OREGON 99 (Rogue River Highway), MP 10.8-12.2, Birdseye Creek, Foots Creek and Millers Gulch Bridge replacement project ($11 million), website
This project will replace three 1920s-era bridges on Rogue River Highway with structures that are better able to withstand earthquakes. The bridges are located east of the city of Rogue River at Birdseye Creek (MP 10.8), Foots Creek (MP 11.4), and Millers Gulch (MP 12.2).
The contractor is working at Millers Gulch Bridge under flagging, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect minor delays the next couple of weeks.
OREGON 99 (Rogue Valley Highway), MP 10.2 to 11, Glenwood to Coleman Creek utility work ($12 million)
This project will widen Oregon 99 from East Glenwood Road to Coleman Creek Bridge, improving safety, as well as pedestrian and bicycle accessibility. Other improvements include adding streetlights at four intersections, a new drainage system, and several mid-block pedestrian crossings with flashing beacons.
Watch for intermittent lane closures through the work zone, Monday through Friday, as utilities are relocating their lines, wires and pipes out of the right of way.
OREGON 99/OREGON 238/OREGON 62 (Medford), Big X Intersection ($15.9 million)
This project will replace ADA ramps, repair damaged areas of the road, repave the travel lanes, rehabilitate several bridge decks, improve drainage and provide traffic signal upgrades.
Watch for nighttime (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) lane closures from Sunday night to Friday morning.
OREGON 140 (Lake of the Woods Highway), MP 3.6 (White City), Rogue Valley rural intersection improvements ($1 million)
This project will provide additional advanced warning and delineation to improve safety at three rural intersections in the Rogue Valley.
Watch for intermittent daytime shoulder closures Monday through Friday on Lake of the Woods Highway at Riley Road in White City.
JOSEPHINE COUNTY
No construction impacts are expected on state highways in Josephine County this week.
