Southwest Oregon Construction Report for the week of July 28-August 3, 2024

 

The following report includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are provided when the information is available.

Pedestrian routes: Where traffic is routed through or around a work zone, pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will also be provided routes through or around the work zone.

COOS COUNTY

OREGON 42 (Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway), MP 23-30, Bridge repairs ($1.75 million)

This project will repair the Hoffman (Middle Fork Coquille River) Bridge at MP 23.4, the Endicott Creek Bridge at MP 26.7 and the Middle Fork Coquille River Bridge at MP 30.6. Work will include repairing the driving surface, paving the approaches and replacing expansion joints on all three bridges.

Watch for intermittent weekday lane closures with brief delays at each bridge. Most lane closures will take place during daytime hours. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. All work is scheduled to be completed by October.

COUNTY ROAD 89 (Sandy Creek Road), MP 2.7, Sandy Creek Bridge construction ($1.4 million)

This project will remove a culvert and replace it with a bridge at milepost 2.7 on Sandy Creek Road. Watch for daytime lane closures and equipment in the roadway. A temporary traffic signal and flaggers will provide traffic control.

OREGON 542 (Powers Highway/1st Street), MP 17.8-18.2, Safe Routes to School Grant Funds Project to the City of Powers ($984,000)

This project will add new curb and gutters, sidewalks, and intersection improvements including ADA ramps along Oregon 542 (1st Street) in the city limits between Alder Street and Fig Street.

Starting Monday, July 29, watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures through the work zone. During sidewalk closures, alternate pedestrian routes will be signed and provided.

 

CURRY COUNTY

U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 300-301 (Port Orford), Garrison Slough to Cemetery Loop Road paving and pedestrian improvements ($4.35 million), website

This project will pave U.S. 101 through Port Orford, replace ADA curb ramps at 15 intersections and make other safety improvements.

Watch for lane and shoulder closures along U.S. 101 as the contractor completes final work. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

 

DOUGLAS COUNTY

OREGON 99 (Oakland-Shady Highway/NE 1st Street), Oakland Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website

This two-year project will replace the 1925 Oakland Bridge on Oregon 99 (NE 1st Street) at the north end of Oakland. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in the Melrose area west of Roseburg.

Drivers should watch for intermittent weekday lane closures through the work zone until construction is completed. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Expect brief delays.

MELROSE ROAD (Douglas County Road 167), Conn-Ford Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website

This two-year project will replace the 1964 Conn-Ford Bridge, which spans the south Umpqua River on Melrose Road about one mile west of Roseburg. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in Oakland.

Melrose Road traffic will use a bypass bridge at the South Umpqua River until the new bridge opens. Drivers should slow down and use caution due to curves at both ends of the bridge and a traffic signal at the east end. Watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes.

Melrose Road is scheduled to remain closed until August 4. This will allow contractors to connect the road to both ends of the new Conn Ford Bridge. During the closure, traffic from the Melrose area will detour onto Old Melrose Road, Harvard Avenue, Stewart Parkway and Garden Valley Boulevard. Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution along the detour.

U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 211.9-212.8, Reedsport lane reconfiguration project ($570,000), website

Most work has been completed. The contractor will return to the work zone later this year to install poles and finish work on the flashing pedestrian beacon at the intersection of U.S. 101 at 20th Street.

 

JACKSON COUNTY

INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), Exit 24 (Phoenix), Jackson County curb ramps, Phase 2A ($1.4 million)

This project will replace ADA sidewalk curb ramps in Jackson County. Construction will take place at and around I-5 Exit 24 (Phoenix). Work is finishing up on this project on both sides of the interchange on Oregon 99, North Phoenix Road and near the I-5 ramps. Watch for workers. 

OREGON 66 (Green Springs Highway), MP 2-8, Ashland to Emigrant Lake pavement repairs

This project will apply a chip seal on Oregon 66 between mileposts 2 and 8 east of Ashland.

After the chip seal has been applied, watch for loose rock on the road. Drivers are advised to allow additional space between vehicles. Crews will return over the following weeks to complete striping and other remaining work items. Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures.

OREGON 99 (Rogue River Highway), MP 10.8-12.2, Birdseye Creek, Foots Creek and Millers Gulch Bridge replacement project ($11 million), website

This project will replace three 1920s-era bridges on Rogue River Highway with structures that are better able to withstand earthquakes. The bridges are located east of the city of Rogue River at Birdseye Creek (MP 10.8), Foots Creek (MP 11.4), and Millers Gulch (MP 12.2).

Millers Gulch Bridge will remain closed until early August. Use alternate routes. Watch for workers.  When the bridge is closed, a pedestrian transport vehicle will be available. The vehicle can accommodate at least two ADA passengers and a maximum of 10 able-bodied pedestrians as well as transport for up to three bicycles with a secured rack.

OREGON 99 (Rogue Valley Highway), MP 10.2 to 11, Glenwood to Coleman Creek utility work ($12 million)

This project will widen Oregon 99 from East Glenwood Road to Coleman Creek Bridge, improving safety, as well as pedestrian and bicycle accessibility. Other improvements include adding streetlights at four intersections, a new drainage system, and several mid-block pedestrian crossings with flashing beacons.

Watch for intermittent lane closures through the work zone, Monday through Friday, as utilities are relocating their lines, wires and pipes out of the right of way.

OREGON 99/OREGON 238/OREGON 62 (Medford), Big X Intersection ($15.9 million)

This project will replace ADA ramps, repair damaged areas of the road, repave the travel lanes, rehabilitate several bridge decks, improve drainage and provide traffic signal upgrades.

Watch for nighttime (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) lane closures from Sunday night to Friday morning.

OREGON 140 (Lake of the Woods Highway), MP 3.6 (White City), Rogue Valley rural intersection improvements ($1 million)

This project will provide additional advanced warning and delineation to improve safety at three rural intersections in the Rogue Valley.

Watch for intermittent daytime shoulder closures Monday through Friday on Lake of the Woods Highway at Riley Road in White City.

 

JOSEPHINE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 68-79, Hugo to Wolf Creek pavement repairs

This project will provide grind/inlay pavement repairs in both directions of I-5 between Hugo and Wolf Creek (milepost 68-79).

For the week of July 29-August 2, Monday to Friday, watch for nighttime (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) lane and shoulder closures through the work zone.

U.S. 199 (Redwood Highway), MP 0.3 (Grants Pass), Bridge girder repair

This project will repair a girder on a bridge that spans the Redwood Highway eastbound exit ramp to 7th Street in Grants Pass. The girder was damaged by an over-height load.

On Sunday night, August 11, the Redwood Highway exit ramp will be closed for four hours starting at 6 p.m. On Thursday night, August 15, the ramp will be closed for approximately three hours. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.

U.S. 199 (Redwood Highway), MP 36-41, O’Brien to California border chip seal ($6.7 million), website

Most work has been completed. Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures for final cleanup work.
