Work Zone Safety
Help us maintain a safe workzone for crews and other drivers by slowing down, paying attention and following signs and flaggers. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
The I-5 bridge over SW 26th Avenue was built in 1959 and widened in the 1980s. It carries over 100,000 vehicles per day. Its deck is heavily worn and near the end of its useful life. The project replaces the worn-out bridge for a smoother ride and to meet current seismic safety standards.
The construction method selected allows I-5 to remain open for all but one weekend. It also saves an estimated $5.5 million in costs and six months of construction time, as well as eases the impact on traffic, reduces nighttime noise, has lower environmental impacts and improves safety for workers and drivers. Additional night work is required to finish the bridge replacement safely and with minimal impact.
Construction started under I-5 on SW 26th Avenue in spring 2023 and will continue through fall 2024. This weekend, ODOT will close four miles of I-5 in both directions from Friday, June 28 at 9 p.m. to Monday, July 1 at 5 a.m. Expect delays.
