Southwest Oregon Construction Report for the week of June 23-29, 2024
The following report includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are provided when the information is available.
Pedestrian routes: Where traffic is routed through or around a work zone, pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will also be provided routes through or around the work zone.

COOS COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 233.5 (North Bend/Glasgow), Turn lanes and traffic signal at East Bay Road ($1.96 million), website
This project will add left- and right-turn lanes from U.S. 101 onto East Bay Road, upgrade the traffic signal and provide pedestrian connections between McCullough Bridge and the intersection. Construction is scheduled for completion by early summer.
Most work that affects traffic will take place at night. Expect intermittent lane closures Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 234 (North Bend), McCullough Bridge inspection
For the week of June 23-28, watch for nighttime (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) lane closures across McCullough Bridge for routine inspection work. Traffic control will be provided by automated flaggers. Drivers should expect brief delays.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 235.4 and MP 236.5 (North Bend), Manhole frame adjustments
This project will adjust manhole frames at two locations along U.S. 101 in North Bend. At both locations, watch for lane closures and turn lane closures at night (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Watch for flaggers and traffic control devices and expect brief delays. Afterwards, watch for steel plates on top of the manholes as the concrete cures.
On Wednesday night, June 26, work will take place at the intersection of Newmark Street and U.S. 101. The left turn lane from Newmark onto northbound U.S. 101 will be closed.
On Thursday night, June 27, work will take place at the intersections of U.S. 101 (northbound and southbound) at Virginia Avenue. This may require closures of turn lanes and travel lanes.
COUNTY ROAD 89 (Sandy Creek Road), MP 2.7, Sandy Creek Bridge construction ($1.4 million)
This project will remove a culvert and replace it with a bridge at milepost 2.7 on Sandy Creek Road. Watch for daytime lane closures and equipment in the roadway.
CURRY COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 300-301 (Port Orford), Garrison Slough to Cemetery Loop Road paving and pedestrian improvements ($4.35 million), website
This project will pave U.S. 101 through Port Orford, replace ADA curb ramps at 15 intersections and make other safety improvements.
Watch for daytime lane and shoulder closures along U.S. 101 as the contractor finishes paving and striping of the highway. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), Exit 125, Northbound off-ramp at Garden Valley Blvd. ($2.4 million), website
This project will improve safety and ease congestion at Exit 125 (Garden Valley) by adding a dedicated right-turn lane to the northbound off-ramp. The project will also replace the traffic signal poles and hardware, install new push-button pedestrian beacons, upgrade sidewalks and ADA curb ramps, and repave the off-ramp and intersection. All work is scheduled to be completed this summer.
Construction is scheduled for 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday night to Friday morning. Watch for nighttime lane and shoulder closures on the northbound I-5 off-ramp, Garden Valley Blvd. and Mulholland Drive. Watch for construction workers and vehicles through the work zone.
On Tuesday night, June 25, watch for traffic control changes at the northbound off-ramp and Garden Valley Road intersection. On that night, the new traffic signals are scheduled to be turned on and all lanes of the off-ramp will be opened. This work may involve temporary ramp closures. Watch for roadside message boards and use alternate routes, if necessary.
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 136-143, Pavement crack sealing ($100,000)
This project will seal cracks in the road surface at various locations along both directions of I-5. All work is expected to be completed by the end of June.
Drivers should watch for intermittent nighttime lane closures. Watch for construction equipment entering and exiting the work zone.
OREGON 99 (Oakland-Shady Highway/NE 1st Street), Oakland Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website
This two-year project will replace the 1925 Oakland Bridge on Oregon 99 (NE 1st Street) at the north end of Oakland. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in the Melrose area west of Roseburg.
Drivers should watch for intermittent weekday lane closures through the work zone until construction is completed. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Expect brief delays.
MELROSE ROAD (Douglas County Road 167), Conn-Ford Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website
This two-year project will replace the 1964 Conn-Ford Bridge, which spans the south Umpqua River on Melrose Road about one mile west of Roseburg. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in Oakland.
Melrose Road traffic will use a bypass bridge at the South Umpqua River until summer. Drivers should slow down and use caution due to curves at both ends of the bridge and a traffic signal at the east end. Watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes.
In mid- to late-July, Melrose Road will likely be closed for two weeks at the bridge. During this closure, contractors will perform road work that will allow traffic to be shifted onto the new bridge.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 211.9-212.8, Reedsport lane reconfiguration project ($570,000), website
This project will ease traffic congestion by adding a second northbound travel lane from Longwood Drive to 16th Street. This will require modifications to the ADA curb ramp and pedestrian flashing beacon at 20th Street. New streetlights will be installed along U.S. 101 at 13th Street and 19th Street.
Watch for traffic alignment changes through the work zone, with two northbound travel lanes, one southbound lane and one shared center turn lane. Watch for weekday lane and shoulder closures. When sidewalks are closed, alternate pedestrian routes will be provided.
JACKSON COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), Exit 24 (Phoenix), Jackson County curb ramps, Phase 2A ($1.4 million)
This project will replace ADA sidewalk curb ramps in Jackson County. Construction will take place at and around I-5 Exit 24 (Phoenix). Work areas will be located on both sides of the interchange and will involve eight intersections on Oregon 99, North Phoenix Road and near the I-5 ramps. Watch for intermittent lane closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Alternate pedestrian routes will be available during sidewalk closures.
OREGON 99 (Rogue River Highway), MP 10.8-12.2, Birdseye Creek, Foots Creek and Millers Gulch Bridge replacement project ($11 million), website
This project will replace three 1920s-era bridges on Rogue River Highway with structures that are better able to withstand earthquakes. The bridges are located east of the city of Rogue River at Birdseye Creek (MP 10.8), Foots Creek (MP 11.4), and Millers Gulch (MP 12.2).
Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures at Millers Gulch through June as work continues Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Watch for workers. Flaggers will provide traffic control and drivers should expect delays up to 20 minutes.
OREGON 99 (Rogue Valley Highway), MP 10.2 to 11, Glenwood to Coleman Creek utility work ($12 million)
This project will widen Oregon 99 from East Glenwood Road to Coleman Creek Bridge, improving safety, as well as pedestrian and bicycle accessibility. Other improvements include adding streetlights at four intersections, a new drainage system, and several mid-block pedestrian crossings with flashing beacons.
Watch for intermittent lane closures through the work zone, Monday through Friday, as utilities are relocating their lines, wires and pipes out of the right of way.
OREGON 140 (Lake of the Woods Highway), MP 3.6 (White City), Rogue Valley rural intersection improvements ($1 million)
This project will provide additional advanced warning and delineation to improve safety at three rural intersections in the Rogue Valley.
Watch for intermittent daytime shoulder closures Monday through Friday on Lake of the Woods Highway at Riley Road in White City.
JOSEPHINE COUNTY
U.S. 199 (Redwood Highway), MP 36-41, O’Brien to California border chip seal ($6.7 million), website
The final phase of this project will involve applying a chip seal to U.S. 199 between O’Brien and the California border (milepost 36-41). In 2023, contractors performed all other work, including adding safety features and paving the highway from Cave Junction to O’Brien.
For the week of June 24-28, watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures through the work zone as the contractor applies permanent striping and completes other work. Expect delays up to 20 minutes. Watch for loose rock in the roadway, slow down, drive with caution and allow extra space between vehicles.
