PORTLAND -- ODOT reopened Northwest Bridge Avenue leading to the St. Johns Bridge Monday morning two months ahead of schedule after completing work to stabilize the hillside above the road.

This project removed hazardous vegetation, brought down loose rock and installed a pinned mesh system.

The road leading to the bridge from westbound U.S. 30, from downtown Portland, has a history of rockfalls, five in the past five years. ODOT completed the most recent emergency repair work in April 2022.

Crews installed more than 16,500 square feet of pinned mesh to stabilize the hillside above Northwest Bridge Avenue, the eastern ramp closest to downtown Portland. The mesh is held in place with about 350 15-foot-long steel anchors.

In addition to completing the mitigation work early, crews repaved Northwest Bridge Avenue. The road was showing signs of deterioration and the new paving gives drivers a smooth ride.

In early January, ODOT closed the road for what was scheduled to be a six-month project. The closure caused traffic disruptions for the St. Johns neighborhood but should provide assurance of fewer slides along the Bridge Avenue hillside.
