What you can expect
You've likely seen our crews working in the area. We're preparing the site for construction to replace the bridge.
We're replacing the bridge in two stages:
-
Setting the new bridge foundation. This work involves machines pounding supports into the ground for the new bridge. We expect to complete this stage by June 30.
During this stage you can expect:
- Noise and delays.
- Single lane closures with flaggers as needed.
- A 24-hour single lane closure for about 10 days.
Stay tuned – we'll let you know the dates of the closure as we know more.
-
Replacing the bridge, one lane at a time. This work involves removing and replacing one lane of the bridge before switching to the other side. We plan to start work after Labor Day in September.
During this stage you can expect:
- Noise and delays.
- Single lane closures with flaggers as needed.
- A 24-hour single lane closure for about 24 days.
Stay tuned – we'll let you know the dates of the closure as we know more.
Throughout construction the open single lane will only be 14-feet wide. We'll use barriers to help define the lane.
Vehicles wider than 12-feet will need to avoid traveling through this area during the restricted days and hours, or use authorized alternate routes.
We don't plan on doing any work in July and August that would impact traffic.

About the project
The Little Humbug Bridge is along U.S. 26 and is more than 60 years old. This is an important highway connecting the coast to the Portland metro area. The bridge foundation is in poor condition and needs to be replaced.
We're installing bridge supports in the spring and will remove and rebuild the bridge one direction at a time starting in September. This will help minimize traffic impacts during the summer.

Pay attention in work zones, slow down and move over – imagine this is where you work! Always drive safely, watch for construction signs and workers.
Remember that fines double in all Oregon work zones, whether workers and signs are present or not.
