Southwest Oregon Construction Report for the week of Feb. 18-24, 2024
The following report includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are added in parenthesis as appropriate.
Pedestrian routes: Where traffic is routed through or around a work zone, pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will also be provided routes through or around the work zone.

COOS COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 233.5 (North Bend/Glasgow), Turn lanes and traffic signal at East Bay Road ($1.96 million), website
This project will add left- and right-turn lanes from U.S. 101 onto East Bay Road, upgrade the traffic signal and provide pedestrian connections between McCullough Bridge and the intersection. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of summer.
Most work that affects traffic will take place at night. Expect intermittent lane closures Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Nearby residents should expect noise consistent with road construction.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 234 (North Bend), McCullough Bridge inspection work
For the week of March 3-9, contractors will perform maintenance and inspection work on McCullough Bridge. Watch for intermittent nighttime lane closures. Flaggers and pilot cars will provide traffic control as needed. Both day and night, watch for workers and equipment through the work area.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 234.5-241.5, Coos Bay-North Bend ADA curb ramp replacement ($3.4 million), website
This project will replace ADA sidewalk curb ramps at 35 intersections in the Coos Bay and North Bend area. Most curb ramps are along U.S. 101, but two are in the Bunker Hill area of Oregon 241 (Coos River Highway, MP 0.2-0.6) and one is in Charleston on Oregon 540 (Cape Arago Highway, MP 8.2).
Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures throughout the work zone. Watch for workers and construction equipment and vehicles. When sidewalks are closed for construction, alternate pedestrian routes will be provided.
OREGON 241 (Coos River Highway), MP 3.7, Chandler Bridge operators house project ($210,000)
This project will modify the Chandler Bridge operators house to allow for safe operation and maintenance of the control panel. All work is expected to be completed by the end of February.
Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work area.
CURRY COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 300-301 (Port Orford), Garrison Slough to Cemetery Loop Road paving and pedestrian improvements ($4.35 million), website
This project will pave U.S. 101 through Port Orford, replace ADA curb ramps at 15 intersections and make other safety improvements.
Watch for construction along U.S. 101 through Port Orford. This work will involve shoulder closures and intermittent flagging.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 303.9 - 304.1 (South of Port Orford), Landslide mitigation project ($1.7 million)
This project will rebuild the slope and repair a segment of the shoulder that has failed along the west side of U.S. 101 at MP 304.05 due to a slide. All work is scheduled to be completed in March.
This section of U.S. 101 will be limited to a single lane 24/7. Flaggers will provide traffic control during the day and temporary traffic signals will be used at night.
Watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes.
OREGON 255 (Carpenterville Highway), MP 336-337, Utility work on Myers Creek Loop
Watch for intermittent lane closures and delays up to 20 minutes on Myers Creek Loop due to utility work. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), Exit 125, Northbound off-ramp at Garden Valley Blvd. ($2.4 million), website
This project will improve safety and ease congestion at Exit 125 (Garden Valley) by adding a dedicated right-turn lane to the northbound off-ramp. The project will also replace the traffic signal poles and hardware, install new push-button pedestrian beacons, upgrade sidewalks and ADA curb ramps, and repave the off-ramp and intersection. All work is scheduled to be completed in June.
Construction is scheduled for 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday night to Friday morning. Watch for nighttime lane and shoulder closures on the northbound I-5 off-ramp, Garden Valley Blvd. and Mulholland Drive. Watch for construction workers and vehicles through the work zone.
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 128, North Umpqua River (Winchester) Bridges inspection work
This project will involve inspection of the northbound and southbound Interstate 5 bridges at the North Umpqua River (milepost 128) on consecutive days.
On Wednesday, March 13, workers will inspect the northbound bridge from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Thursday, March 14, they will inspect southbound bridge from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. During these hours, watch for lane closures and congestion. Watch for workers and equipment along the work zone.
OREGON 38 (Umpqua Highway), MP 50-51 (Drain), ADA curb ramp replacement ($4.2 million)
This project will improve safety for pedestrians by bringing several highway curb ramps along Oregon 38 in Drain into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures along Oregon 38.
OREGON 99 (Oakland-Shady Highway/NE 1st Street), Oakland Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website
This two-year project will replace the 1925 Oakland Bridge on Oregon 99 (NE 1st Street) at the north end of Oakland. The bridge will be built on a new alignment, just north of the existing bridge. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in the Melrose area west of Roseburg.
The traffic signal for the bridge has been turned off and the roadway will be controlled by an automated flagger system 24/7 until March or April. Watch for construction vehicles and equipment.
OREGON 138 (North Umpqua Highway), MP 16.3 (Glide), Little River Bridge water line repair (local utility project)
This is a local utility project in Glide that will repair a water line on the Little River Bridge. All work is expected to be completed by the end of March.
Watch for lane and shoulder closures throughout the work zone. Watch for workers and construction equipment and vehicles. Motorists should watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work area.
MELROSE ROAD (Douglas County Road 167), Conn-Ford Bridge replacement ($22.6 million for two-bridge bundle), website
This two-year project will replace the 1964 Conn-Ford Bridge, which spans the south Umpqua River on Melrose Road about one mile west of Roseburg. This project is part of a two-bridge bundle that also includes replacing a bridge in Oakland.
Melrose Road traffic will use a bypass bridge at the South Umpqua River until spring or summer. Motorists should slow down and drive with caution due to curves at both ends of the bridge and a traffic signal at the east end. Watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes.
JACKSON COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), Exit 24 (Phoenix), Jackson County curb ramps, Phase 2A ($1.4 million)
This project will replace ADA sidewalk curb ramps in Jackson County. Construction will take place at and around I-5 Exit 24 (Phoenix). Work areas will be located on both sides of the interchange and will involve eight intersections on Oregon 99, North Phoenix Road and near the I-5 ramps. Watch for intermittent lane closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Alternate pedestrian routes will be available during sidewalk closures.
OREGON 99 (Rogue River Highway), MP 10.8-12.2, Birdseye Creek, Foots Creek and Millers Gulch Bridge replacement project ($11 million), website
This project will replace three 1920s-era bridges on Rogue River Highway with structures that are better able to withstand earthquakes. The bridges are located east of the city of Rogue River at Birdseye Creek (MP 10.8), Foots Creek (MP 11.4), and Millers Gulch (MP 12.2).
Construction has begun at Foots Creek Bridge. Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures through the work zones and expect delays up to 20 minutes, Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
OREGON 99 (Gold Hill Spur), MP 2.6-2.7, Rogue River Bridge improvement project ($13 million), website
This project will improve the historic 1927 Rogue River (Gold Hill) Bridge. It will widen and strengthen the existing structure to handle today’s traffic while keeping the historical integrity of the bridge.
Watch for day and night lane and shoulder closures along Oregon 99 through the work zone in February. Prepare to slow and expect brief delays. Watch for workers.
OREGON 99 (Rogue Valley Highway), MP 4.0 to 4.7 (Medford), Rogue Valley intersection improvements ($1.5 million), website
This project in northwest Medford will realign Mace Road and Berrydale Avenue to intersect with Oregon 99 at angles that allow for better visibility, construct new ADA curb ramps at both intersections, and rebuild driveways at adjacent businesses. Construction is scheduled for completion by early summer.
Traffic will be impacted for the majority of the project with a single-lane closure in the northbound direction of Oregon 99. Mace Rd. and Berrydale Ave. will be closed at the Oregon 99 intersection up to 30 days while the intersections are being re-aligned. Local motorists are advised to use alternate routes during the closures.
For the week of Feb. 18-24, watch for workers on Mace Rd. and Berrydale Ave. constructing driveways, sidewalks, pedestrian facilities and storm drains.
OREGON 99 (Rogue Valley Highway), MP 10.2 to 11, Glenwood to Coleman Creek utility work
Watch for possible single-lane traffic, Monday through Friday, as utilities are relocating their lines, wires and pipes out of the right of way for an upcoming improvement project.
JOSEPHINE COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 57.5 (north Grants Pass), Hillcrest Drive Bridge seismic improvements and retrofitting ($5 million)
The Hillcrest Drive undercrossing is closed until early spring for additional seismic bridge strengthening. During the closure, use alternate routes.
