TIGARD -- The Hall Boulevard crossing over OR 217 in Tigard will close for nine months starting 6 a.m. Monday March 4, the first in a series of major closures needed while crews build a new, wider overpass with bicycle lanes and wider sidewalks.

The work is part of the OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project, which will build auxiliary lanes in both directions of the highway between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. The project, scheduled for completion at the end of next year, will mean smoother, safer and more reliable travels along the highway.

Two other major closures – one overnight closure and one weekend closure -- will follow later in March.

Here is a look at all the closures planned for March.

  • At 6 a.m. Monday, March 4, the Hall Boulevard overpass over OR 217 in Tigard will close for nine months. We need to rebuild the overpass with wider footings to make room for the new auxiliary lanes and shoulders underneath. The new overpass will be more earthquake resilient and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. As a detour, drivers should use OR 99W to Greenburg Road to Hall Boulevard (and vice versa). A temporary bike and pedestrian bridge will be available throughout the closure.
  • From 11 p.m. Saturday, March 9 until 8 a.m. Sunday, March 10 both directions of OR 217 -- northbound and southbound – will close. During this overnight closure, crews will install the temporary bike and pedestrian bridge over OR 217.
  • From 9 p.m. Friday, March 15 until 5 a.m. Monday, March 18 both directions of OR 217 – northbound and southbound — will close. During this weekend closure, crews will demolish the existing Hall Boulevard overpass.
OR 217 Closure

Map shows closed roads Saturday night March 9 and the Friday-Monday, March 15-18 weekend closure.

We know these closures will be a disruption for travelers and neighbors and we will work hard to safely complete this necessary work as quickly as we can. Please remind your neighbors, friends, and family in the area to check the project website and sign up for email updates in order to get the latest information.

As with all construction, the closure schedule is subject to change.

Background

The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will build auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.

We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
