The southern section of Northwest Bridge Avenue leading to the St. Johns Bridge will close Jan. 8 for six months while crews stabilize the adjacent hillside to prevent future rockfalls.
The road leading to the bridge from westbound U.S. 30, from downtown Portland, has a history of rockfalls, five in the past five years. ODOT completed the most recent emergency repair work in April 2022.
This project will stabilize the hillside by removing hazardous vegetation, bringing down loose rock and installing a pinned mesh system. Construction requires full closure of the southern section of Northwest Bridge Avenue.
The closure is expected to remain in place through July 2.
Here are a few details about the closure.
- Travelers will be detoured on the northern section of Northwest Bridge Avenue to access U.S. 30 and the St. Johns Bridge.
- Expect traffic delays on U.S. 30 and on North Lombard Street.
- Sidewalks and parking will close in the project area.
- Accessible detours will be available for pedestrians and people on bikes.
- The Ridge Trail Trailhead on Northwest Bridge Avenue will close for up to two weeks starting January.
Early in the project, flaggers will control traffic where Bridge Avenue meets the St. Johns Bridge while trucks remove debris from the hillside. Weekday road closures of up to 20 minutes at a time will be needed during a two-week window, the exact schedule still to be determined.
