U.S. 30: Columbia Avenue to 8th Street construction is almost complete!

U.S. 30: Columbia Avenue to 8th Street

Over the past few months, we've been working on making U.S. 30 from Columbia Avenue to 8th Street safer and more accessible for all users – whether you drive, ride, walk or roll!

Now that construction is almost complete, as you go through the area you'll notice:

New permanent striping.
One lane of traffic in each direction.
A new center turn lane with pedestrian islands.
New bike lanes.

You may still see some crews in the area wrapping up remaining work.

Pedestrian Island

If you walk or ride through this area, you'll now have a safer way to cross U.S. 30.

We've installed two new pedestrian islands at:

2nd Street intersection.
6th Street intersection.

Center Turn Lane

When you're driving through the area, now you can make left turns to visit local businesses using the new center turn lane.

If you're driving east on U.S. 30, you'll merge into the left hand lane just past the Columbia Avenue intersection.
If you're driving west on U.S. 30, you'll merge into the left hand lane just past the 8th Street Intersection.

These locations are placed where drivers can merge safely after passing crosswalks and the intersection.

The center turn lanes allows a safer space for drivers while they wait for a window to make the left turn without slowing down traffic.

New Bike Lanes

We've installed new bike lanes on both sides of U.S. 30 between Columbia Avenue and 8th Street.

This area has local businesses, hotels and restaurants where people work, shop and live. By adding bike lanes and the pedestrian islands, this area now has safer spaces where people can walk, ride or roll more comfortably.

Not only do the bike lanes create a space for bicyclists, they also help make the area safer for drivers. Now as you drive through the area, it's easier to see where your lane ends.

What's Next

We're mostly finished with construction! We'll return next year to install bike detection cameras.

These cameras will detect when a bicyclist is riding through the area and make the signal last longer so they have enough time to cross the intersection.
