Drivers should expect heavy traffic Veterans Day weekend

Heavy Traffic Expected

EUGENE/CORVALLIS — Prepare for heavy traffic this weekend if you’re hitting the roads.

Interstate 5 will be particularly busy because Oregon State University and University of Oregon have home football games on Saturday Nov. 11. Veterans Day parades and events are planned around the state throughout the weekend.

Traffic is likely to be heavy all-day Saturday in the Willamette Valley, with the OSU game starting at 2:30 p.m. and the U of O game starting at 7:30 p.m. Thousands of travelers will be heading to events all day and returning home.

Several Oregon communities host Veterans Day events that might affect highway traffic directly. One such event is the Veterans Day Parade in Albany. The parade will require these closures from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • U.S. 20 westbound between OR 99E and First Avenue.
  • OR 99E southbound between Seventh Street/Jackson Street and U.S. 20.

Communities will offer traffic control changes to increase safety and efficiency for travelers.

Always remember:

  • Put your traveling plan together now. Leave early, be patient, stay alert so you can react to sudden stops in traffic, quick lane changes by other vehicles, and leave plenty of distance between you and others.
  • Keep current on road and travel conditions by visiting Tripcheck.com, calling 5-1-1, and listening for radio traffic-related news and updates.
  • Avoid distractions and hand your phone off to a passenger for calls or texts.
  • Buckle up every trip, every time.
  • Have a sober, rested driver behind the wheel of your vehicle before and after the game. If someone is driving dangerously or you suspect they are impaired call 911.
