Hillside safety work begins January 8 on NW Bridge Avenue

​We are stabilizing the hillside by NW Bridge Avenue (U.S. 30 Bypass) southeast of the St. Johns Bridge. The project removes hazardous vegetation, scales loose rock and installs a pinned mesh system to prevent future rockfall. Construction requires a full closure of the southern section of NW Bridge Avenue for about six months.

Traffic Impacts & Schedule

Expect traffic delays January 8 - July 2, 2024 on U.S. 30 and N. Lombard St. as
NW Bridge Avenue closes for rockfall prevention work. 

• The southern section of NW Bridge Avenue (U.S. 30 Bypass) will completely close to all traffic.
• Sidewalks and parking close in the project area.
• Accessible detours for pedestrians and people on bikes.
• The Ridge Trail Trailhead on NW Bridge Avenue will close for up to two weeks in January 2024.

Safety and Preservation Improvements for the St. Johns Bridge and U.S. 30.

ODOT is improving this corridor by designing and constructing six projects. This $38 million investment aims to: Increase safety. Preserve roads and bridges. Build protections for our rivers, fish and public health. Read below to learn about each project.

Projects in construction:

NW Bridge Avenue Rockfall Mitigation: (featured above)

We are improving safety and preventing rockfall on NW Bridge Avenue (U.S. 30 Bypass) southwest of the St. Johns Bridge. The project removes hazardous vegetation and loose rock and installs pinned mesh to prevent future rockfall. Construction expected in 2024.

St Johns Bridge Repair:

We are improving the long-term safety and lifespan of the St. Johns Bridge by repairing the concrete on the pier columns and arches under the bridge. Repairing the concrete will protect the bridge from corrosion, maintaining the service life of this historic landmark. Completion expected in 2025.

NW Industrial Area Repavement: 

We are improving safety and repaving U.S. 30 between St. Johns Bridge and NW Kittridge Avenue southeast of the St. Johns Bridge. The project installs new signals, builds ramps that meet ADA requirements and adjusts lane widths to accommodate people biking. Completion expected in 2024.

Projects in design:

Willamette River Stormwater Improvement: 

We are designing 26 stormwater treatment facilities near three highways in Portland to protect fish, wildlife, water quality and public health. These facilities filter water runoff and reduce pollutants from entering the Willamette River using our current stormwater system. Construction expected in 2026.

U.S. 30 Culvert Rehabilitation: 

We are designing repair work to strengthen and lengthen the life of culverts under U.S. 30 between NW Portland and Scappoose. Construction expected in 2025.

NW Bridge Avenue Preservation: 

We are preserving NW Bridge Avenue northwest of the St. Johns Bridge by strengthening the concrete supports under the bridge and restoring the road surface. These improvements will extend the service life of the structure. Design expected to begin in 2024.
