September update: Historic Highway State Trail ribbon cutting this Saturday!

Come celebrate the opening of two additional miles of the Historic Highway State Trail!
 New segment of the Historic Highway State Trail from Viento State Park looking east toward Mitchell Point.
We're celebrating the opening of two more miles of the Historic Highway State Trail from Viento State Park to the east! ODOT, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, and project partners are hosting a ribbon cutting celebration for all with kids activities, e-bike rentals and more. We hope to see you there.
Date: Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023. Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Where: Viento State Park South Campground, Hood River County.
The event will feature speakers, food by Empanadas Maria Elba, information booths, a campground open house, and a kid’s bike information and activity station.
Opening remarks will begin shortly after 10 a.m. and include a ribbon cutting. After the ribbon cutting, you will be able to use the two additional miles of trail. Kids can enjoy a scavenger hunt until 1 p.m. when the event closes. The trail will remain open for everyone to continue using after the event ends.
Transportation to the event
Due to the limited amount of event parking at Viento State Park, please arrive car-free if possible. View more information on arriving by bike, including e-bike rentals, and by transit.
State Trail work continues at the Mitchell Point Tunnel

Construction continues on the Mitchell Point Tunnel segment of the Historic Highway State Trail east of Viento State Park.

Travelers on I-84 can expect:
- I-84 East Exit 58 to remain closed for construction of the Mitchell Point Tunnel.
I-84 Paving
Paving, resurfacing, and bridge repair continues on I-84 between Interstate 205 and Marine Drive (exit 17). Work to address the ‘bumps’ felt on transitions between bridges and the new pavement is anticipated to be complete soon. This work is weather dependent. Thank you for your patience.
Travelers can expect:
- Nighttime lane and periodic ramp closures between I-205 and Marine Drive (Exit 17) Monday through Friday.
- Lane closures allowed Sunday to Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday, Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
- Several nighttime detours of I-84 east and west (one direction at a time) at I-205 in September.
- Work is scheduled to begin on NE 238th Drive late September to reconfigure the northbound signal with two dedicated left-turn lanes onto I-84 west. Expect periodic lane closures.
Hood River intersection improvement project: Cascade Avenue at Rand Road
Construction continues at U.S. 30 (Cascade Avenue) at Rand Road in Hood River to align the north and south roads of the intersection and install a new signal to improve safety and accessibility.
Northbound travel and the center left turn lane on Rand Road have been re-opened to traffic. Travelers can expect:
- Periodic nighttime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic.
- No turning restrictions.
- Signed and accessible pedestrian detours.
TriMet's “A Better Red” project affects I-84 and I-205 travel in east Portland
TriMet’s A Better Red Project is extending the MAX Red Line west and improving system reliability. The project requires:
- Nighttime lane closures and shoulder closures on I-84 and I-205.
- Periodic full closures of I-84 east Exit 7.
- Up to several full weekend closures of I-84 at I-205 later in 2023.
- Disruption of MAX Red Line service between Gateway and Portland International Airport between June 18 and October 21.
