Plan ahead! Interstate 84 west detour scheduled for Aug. 11-14
The second detour of Interstate 84 west near the Interstate 205 interchange has been scheduled to finish bridge repairs that started in late June. We appreciate your patience as the contractor secured additional construction materials necessary to complete the work.
-
First weekend detour: Finished in late June.
-
Second weekend detour: Noon Friday, Aug. 11 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug.14.
Drivers should prepare for a detour of westbound I-84 in East Portland as crews install a new concrete surface on a bridge. This work will address the bumps felt on the transition between the bridge and the new pavement.
The detour begins as soon as noon Friday, August 11, and lasts through 5 a.m., Monday, August 14. Cars can follow a short detour from I-84 west to I-205 south and merge back onto I-84 west a short time later. On-ramps leading to the area will be closed at the same time:
- I-84 westbound on-ramp at NE 102nd Avenue (closed at night only).
- I-84 westbound on-ramp at NE 181st Avenue.
- I-84 westbound on-ramp at Fairview Parkway.
Travelers should plan for delays and consider taking an alternate route or form of transportation during the weekend detour. Alternative routes will be available in the area. The exit to I-205 north will remain open throughout the weekend.
In addition to the weekend detour, travelers can expect additional traffic impacts to continue into the fall:
- Nighttime detours of I-84 east at I-205 for several nights.
- Several nighttime closures of the following ramps to/from I-205, including:
- I-205 north ramps to I-84 east.
- I-205 south ramps to I-84 east.
- Nighttime lane and ramp closures in both directions of I-84 between I-205 and Marine Drive in Troutdale.
- Periodic lane closures on NE 238th Drive to reconfigure the northbound signal with two dedicated left-turn lanes onto I-84 west.
As with all construction, the schedule is subject to change. The latest information including detour maps will be posted on the project website. Check TripCheck.com for real-time traffic information.
This work is part of the I-84 Paving project. In 2023, this project is repaving and resurfacing about 6 miles of I-84 from Interstate 205 to 169th Avenue and from just east of 201st Avenue to Marine Drive (Exit 17). The work runs through Portland, Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village and Troutdale.
The project will improve the safety and lifespan of I-84 by:
- Resurfacing two sections of I-84 with new asphalt or removing ruts in concrete.
- Repaving Exit 10 eastbound on- and off-ramps at NE 122nd.
- Repaving sections of the I-205 interchange.
- Resurfacing some bridges.
- Repairing or replacing bridge joints on several structures along I-84.
- Constructing new accessible sidewalk curb ramps at the NE 122nd Avenue on-ramp to I-84 east. (This includes permanently closing a crosswalk at the intersection.)
- Reconfiguring the northbound signal at NE 238th Drive with two dedicated left-turn lanes onto I-84 west.
Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2023. More information on work scheduled for 2023 and beyond is available on our project website. Stay tuned for more email updates!
