Heading east on U.S. 30 in northwest Oregon? Please use the detour at Colvin Road.

Some GPS devices and map sites are showing improper routes

July 21, 2023

If you’re traveling eastbound on U.S. 30 in northwest Oregon this summer, please use the Colvin Road detour to go around our Graham Creek Fish Passage Project on U.S. 30 about three miles west of Clatskanie.

Do not use other routes for this detour, even if your GPS or mapping website shows them.

We learned this week that Google Maps – and possibly other mapping sites –is giving the wrong directions. If you are eastbound on U.S. 30 heading toward Clatskanie, Rainier and Portland, please follow the signs to use the appropriate detour onto Colvin Road.

The local roads in this area are not appropriate for high traffic, commercial, other large vehicles or those pulling trailers.

Westbound U.S. 30 traffic will continue to stay on the highway because we are closing only the eastbound side for the Graham Creek project. We expect to complete this project in late September.

Find out more about the project and correct eastbound detour route on our website.

We have submitted multiple corrections to Google Maps, but any response or correction to their map may not come before the Graham Creek project ends. We hope to have a sign in the next week or so warning eastbound U.S. 30 traffic to stay on the highway instead of turning onto Woodson Road.

In a sampling of a few other mapping sites, we found that Waze, Mapquest and Bing Maps show either the correct detour to Colvin Road or no detour at all. (Showing no construction detour is not a problem for travelers because we have signs marking the right turn onto Colvin Road).

We apologize for the confusion this situation has caused travelers and the disruption for the residents who live on the inappropriate detour.

As a reminder, the Lewis and Clark Bridge between Rainier and Longview, Wash., reopened at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 20, after closing Sunday night for several days of major repairs.
