Chip seal operations on U.S. 20 (Central Oregon Highway) in 2022.
The project to repair a section of U.S. 20 (Central Oregon Highway), between Warm Springs Road and Harper Junction, has resumed.
The contractor is back on-site this week to chip seal a 13-mile section, between mileposts 180 and 193. A chip seal includes spreading rock chips onto emulsified oil, then pressing the rocks in with rollers. Chip seals help protect and extend the life of the existing roadway and help provide a smooth ride.
Minor pavement repairs will continue through June. Pavement striping will occur later in June.
Travel Impacts
Travelers through these work zones can expect the following impacts:
- Flaggers and pilot cars directing single lane traffic through work zones.
- Delays up to 20 minutes.
- Reduced speeds.
- Loose rock on the roadway.
- Minor delays during nighttime/early morning hours for road sweeping.
Plan extra travel time, reduce speed and watch for construction crews and equipment. Crews will sweep roadway but expect some loose rock to be present for several days after chip seal.
Bicycle riders should be prepared for traveling on rock chip covered highway sections behind a pilot car with no usable shoulders. Pedestrians, including those with disabilities, will be provided access through or around the work zone.
If possible, use alternate routes or delay travel to avoid work zones.
