Travelers should expect continued delays and lane closures on I-84 between east Portland and Mitchell Point during May
Construction continues between Interstate 205 and Hood River while crews improve Interstate 84 and extend the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

Lane closures near Bonneville Dam and Cascade Locks as bridge and tunnel work continues
Resurfacing inside the Toothrock Tunnel continues and bridge repairs begin in May near Bonneville Dam and Cascade Locks. Travelers can expect:
- Around-the-clock single lane closures on I-84 from Sundays at 5 p.m. to Thursdays at 4 p.m.
- Both directions near Bonneville Dam (Exit 40) until Memorial Day. Eastbound work continues in the Toothrock Tunnel and bridge work begins westbound starting as soon as May 7 if weather allows.
- Both directions near Cascade Locks (Exit 44) for bridge work as soon as May 7 if weather allows.
- Nighttime lane closures Sunday through Thursday nights between Multnomah Falls and Cascade Locks.
I-84 paving and resurfacing in East Multnomah County continues
Paving, resurfacing and bridge repair continues on I-84 between 201st Avenue and Marine Drive (exit 17) in May.
Paving I-84 between I-205 and 169th Avenue could begin later this month.
In May, travelers can expect:
- Nighttime lane and ramp closures on I-84 between I-205 and Exit 17 in Troutdale:
- Sunday to Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Friday night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday.
- Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail work advances
Construction continues on a new two-mile section of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail connecting Viento State Park and Mitchell Point to the east. Work also continues at the nearby Mitchell Point Tunnel segment. Travelers can expect:
- Around-the-clock single lane closure on I-84 east near Exit 56 until Memorial Day.
- I-84 east Exit 58 to remain closed during construction.
Landslide repair continues
Construction of two new culverts under I-84 and the Historic Highway continues one mile west of Multnomah Falls, the site of nearly 30 debris flows in 2021. When complete, the culverts will drain stormwater off the steep slope and away from roadways. Travels can expect:
- Periodic single lane closures in both directions on I-84 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday
- Shoulder closures on I-84.
Hood River intersection improvement project: Cascade Avenue at Rand Road
Construction began this spring at the intersection of U.S. 30 (Cascade Avenue) at Rand Road in Hood River to align the north and south roads of the intersection and install a new signal to improve safety and accessibility.
Work is underway at the northeast corner of the intersection for several months. Travelers can expect:
- Single lane closures, lane shifts and turning restrictions on U.S. 30 and Rand Road.
- Signed and accessible pedestrian detours.
TriMet's “A Better Red” project affects I-84 and I-205 travel in east Portland
TriMet’s A Better Red Project is extending the MAX Red Line west and improving system reliability. The project requires:
- Nighttime lane closures and shoulder closures on I-84 and I-205.
- Periodic full closures of I-84 east Exit 7.
- Up to several full weekend closures of I-84 at I-205 later in 2023.
Historic Highway spring maintenance
Crews will complete maintenance work along the Historic Columbia River Highway, including:
- Paving between East Larch Mountain Road and Vista House with a full closure from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 11.
- Removing trees in danger of falling into the roadway near Latourell with flaggers directing traffic and in late May/early June.
