Projects include pavement preservation, culverts and sign upgrades
We’re designing projects to enhance safety for travelers in eastern Oregon. While construction is one to two years away, we hope you will take this opportunity to learn what we have planned. Please visit each project’s webpage for more details and contact us if you have questions.

Pavement preservation
U.S. 95 resurfacing:
We will resurface an 85-mile section of U.S. 95, from milepost 36 to the Oregon/Nevada border. Project design continues into late 2023, with construction anticipated to begin in 2024.

Culverts
Culverts manage the flow of surface water near roadways. Failed culverts can damage roads and create safety hazards for travelers.
U.S. 20 culvert repairs:
U.S. 20 is a main east-west route through central and eastern Oregon. Keeping the highway in good condition is vital for freight and public transportation. We will address issues such as rust, barrel damage, and open joints by replacing or repairing culverts. Project design continues through 2023, with construction planned for 2024.
OR 86 culvert replacement:
The culvert at Fish Creek (photo), milepost 63.22, is failing. We will replace the culvert and update the creek channel to improve fish passage. Project design continues through 2023, with construction anticipated for 2024.

Additional Variable Speed Limit (VSL) signs and sensor poles, like these shown here, will be added to I-84.
Signs and Safety
Three projects will improve safety for travelers along sections of OR 86, I-84 and other highways in eastern Oregon. Two of these projects focus on gathering real-time information for motorists during inclement weather or other hazards.
OR 86 guardrail upgrades:
To finish replacing roadside barriers along OR 86, we will upgrade remaining sections of sub-standard safety rail. Project design continues through late 2024, with construction planned for 2025.
I-84 sign upgrades:
We will upgrade road and weather sensors, and install variable speed limit (VSL) signs and variable message signs (VMS) to better manage speed limits and increase safety for all travelers. This project enhances an existing VSL system on I-84 between Baker City and La Grande. Project design wraps up early 2024, with construction anticipated to begin mid-2024.
Eastern Oregon traffic & weather cameras:
We will install new roadside traffic/weather stations and cameras in various locations in eastern Oregon. Real-time conditions will be displayed on Tripcheck.com and other highway signs. Project design continues into 2023, with construction anticipated to start late 2023.
