Four seats open on advisory committee for the new Great Streets program

Jan. 27, 2023

Hello, friends of active and public transportation in Oregon!

Are you passionate about improving safety and connectivity on main streets in communities and towns across Oregon? Our new Great Streets program is recruiting four community representatives to serve as part of the project review team for this new statewide program. Ideal candidates will bring lived experience as a person with a disability, from a culture or ethnicity that has historically been excluded or under-represented, as a small business owner or healthcare provider, or representative of other groups that may not have traditional transportation planning experience.

What you should know

Great Streets projects will improve safety and increase access to walking, biking and transit in Oregon communities where the main street is also a state highway. This is a "proof-of-concept" program with the goal of learning more about the potential for developing corridor-scale projects in the future.

Over the past two years, we have been working toward a future transportation system that is innovative and serves users with diverse needs. Our Strategic Action Plan highlights three main priorities (equity, modern transportation system, and sufficient and reliable funding) that guide our decisions. The goal of creating open seats and including community members in the decision-making process is to better serve those the system has not served in the past.

We encourage you to share this opportunity in your communities and organizations. We look forward to welcoming new perspectives.

Timeline and process

The application will be open through Feb. 17. We will follow up with applicants in early March. Open-seats representatives will join representatives from public and active transportation advisory committees and our staff to review proposed projects. The team will come together in mid-March to review the initial proposals and convene again in mid-August to finalize the list of recommended projects for approval by the Oregon Transportation Commission.

Between March 1 and April 7, we anticipate representatives will spend up to 25 hours of time reviewing applications and attending one preliminary discussion (up to 2 hours) and a scoring workshop (up to 3 hours). Between Aug. 7-18, we anticipate an additional time commitment of up to 10 hours to review final applications and to attend one workshop (up to 2 hours).
