ODOT PROJECT UPDATE:

U.S. 101 sidewalk construction coming to Port Orford in July

Contractor will pave highway travel lanes in spring or summer 2023

June 29, 2022

PORT ORFORD – Sidewalk construction is scheduled to begin in July along U.S. Highway 101 in Port Orford.

The upcoming project will make several pedestrian safety improvements between Garrison Slough and Cemetery Loop Road:

  • Build or replace more than 120 sidewalk curb ramps to meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.
  • Install flashing pedestrian beacons at three intersections, including one near Driftwood Elementary School that features a new pedestrian island.
  • Add curb extensions and streetlights at six intersections to make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the highway.

As part of the $4.35 million project, Tidewater Contractors will pave this one-mile section of highway.

Sidewalks this year: Tidewater will focus on sidewalks, curb ramps and other pedestrian features during the first phase of construction (summer 2022 to spring 2023).

Starting in July, Tidewater plans to begin replacing sidewalk curb ramps at the south end of the project area and move north along the northbound side of the highway. When the contractors reach Madrona Avenue at the north end of the city, they will turn around and work south replacing sidewalk ramps on the southbound side of the highway.

During sidewalk closures, alternate pedestrian routes will be identified and signed.

Paving in 2023: When most of the sidewalk work has been completed, Tidewater will pave the roadway and apply permanent striping in the current three-lane pattern. Paving work will probably be scheduled for late spring or early summer 2023.

Work hours: Most work will take place during daylight hours. However, paving operations will probably be scheduled for nighttime.
