Monday is Juneteenth

What is Juneteenth?

Since the late 1800s, Juneteenth – celebrated annually on June 19 – has been an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

On June 19, 1865, about two months after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered in Appomattox, VA, Gordon Granger, a Union general, arrived in Galveston, TX, to inform enslaved African-Americans that the Civil War had ended and they were now free people. General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.

President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021.

Last year, with House Bill 2168, Oregon formally recognized Juneteenth as an official state holiday in beginning in 2022: “This holiday will serve to honor the freedom of enslaved people in the United States, acknowledge Oregon’s racist roots, and celebrate the contributions of Black Americans in the face of inequity and systemic oppression.”

In observance of Juneteenth, all State offices will be closed on Monday, June 20, 2022. No in-person services will be available that day.

Our CCD Phone Service Center will be open for their regular hours, 5am to midnight.

Our Over-Dimension Unit will close at 5pm on Friday and not reopen until normal business hours on Tuesday morning.

Please plan ahead to make sure all of your business needs are met.

Summer Construction

Highway construction

Summer is a busy time on the roadways, and it's also a busy time for road crews and construction projects. It's always a good idea to plan ahead and know before you go when travelling in the summer.

Looking forward to the summer construction season, remember that TripCheck is your most up-to-date source of information for route conditions.

Don't forget to make sure you're signed up for all the alerts you might need as you plan your summer business.

Looking Ahead: Farm Season

Oregon farms

For many Oregon farmers, summer is the busiest time of year.

Sometimes farms have land spread over a wide region and farmers must drive large, slow-moving equipment or trucks on rural roads or highways to reach a field.

Driving a large piece of equipment on a highway is legal and often a necessary part of harvest.

The Oregon Farm Bureau offers their Rural Road Safety brochure that has many helpful reminders on safely sharing the road with farmers.

Additionally, it is important for farmers to remember that farm trucking in Oregon is a regulated activity. Regardless of how farmers use their trucks, safety regulations may apply. Read the ODOT Guide to Farm Trucking in Oregon and find more information on farm trucking in Oregon online at CCD's Farm Trucking webpage.

Commercial Boat Haulers - Call Before You Haul

boats

Earlier this year, the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) initiated a new program to help boat haulers, auctioneers, marinas, manufacturers and brokers easily comply with state, provincial and federal laws, prevent costly delays in transporting or selling boats, and help reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species for the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
