From 1 am to 4 am, freeway traffic will slow for utility work
Both Interstates 205 and 84 will see rolling slowdowns from 1 to 4 a.m. over five nights next week for utility work.
The slowdowns will take place on eastbound and westbound I-84 and northbound and southbound I-205 in the area where the two highways run parallel to each other, with Gateway Green in between.
The slowdowns will allow Pacific Power to work on a tower and on the power lines that cross the highways. Crews are moving the overhead transmission lines over I-205 and I-84 before beginning construction on the piers for a new light rail bridge over I-84 east of I-205, part of TriMet’s A Better Red project.
During the rolling slowdowns, traffic control vehicles will hold traffic to a steady but slow pace to allow the Pacific Power crews time to carry out their work.
The first slowdown is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. The same schedule repeats the next four early mornings through Saturday April 30.
TriMet’s A Better Red project will extend the MAX Red Line west to Fair Complex/Hillsboro Airport, serving 10 extra stations that only Blue Line trains now serve. Among the improvements will be the addition of a second set of tracks in the Gateway area and near Portland International Airport. Work on the project will continue through 2024.
