ESTACADA – Crews continued work on guardrails, log piles and hillside mesh installation this week as OR 224 remained on schedule for re-opening by May 1.

Work will continue in the Clackamas River corridor through the summer after the road re-opens but with frequent delays with many as five different work zones conducting rock scaling, mesh installation, paving, and cleanup work.

What’s happening now

  • A crane at milepost 36.7 continues to help put in place a series of mesh panels, which restrain future rock slides. Mesh is also needed at other smaller sites.
  • Rock scaling work continues to bring down loose rocks at several sites.
  • Log decks and brush piles are being removed. Crews this week are starting to inspect the sites to consider necessary restoration work.
  • The U.S. Forest Service will continue the cleanup at the Hole in the Wall and Moore Creek Boat Access Day Sites. They will be open to river users after the road reopens May 1.
  • Pothole patching is still under way although full paving of the road won’t take place until later in the summer.

The OR 224 Clackamas River corridor will mostly offer a driving, sightseeing experience this summer, the result of the extensive damage from the Labor Day 2020 wildfire, leaving recreation sites closed.
