Commercial drivers who have a federal exemption or state vision waiver will follow a new vision screening process to obtain their Medical Examination Certificate as of March 22.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will replace federal exemptions and state-issued vision waivers for commercial driver licenses with a new process on that date.
Current federal exemptions will remain valid through March 22, 2023. Current Oregon waivers will remain valid until their expiration date, even if they expire after March 22, 2023.
Under the new process, drivers must pass a vision examination by their eye doctor and submit an FMCSA form to their medical examiner. CDL holders must maintain a current MEC on file at their state DMV. The FMCSA will post the form for eye doctors on March 22 at its website under Driver Exemption Programs here.
Oregon will no longer issue vision waivers for intrastate driving as of March 22, when the new FMCSA process takes effect.

Get ready for air travel now
If you travel by air or might in the future, make sure you have identification acceptable at airport security checkpoints. Starting in May 2023, you will need a Real ID-compliant form of ID for all flights such as a Real ID-compliant driver license, a passport, passport card or U.S. military ID.
Don’t wait until the rush for Real ID licenses and passports! If you want the Real ID option on your Oregon driver license or ID card, you must apply in person – walk in or by appointment.
