CORVALLIS – The week of March 14 we are planning a compliance operation to monitor and enforce the 12-ton weight restriction on the Van Buren Bridge.
Vehicles that are violating the 12-ton weight restriction will be fined per Oregon Revised Statute 818. Vehicles that operate over weight can receive citations. In this instance, a violation of a weight restricted bridge is fined at the highest schedule per Oregon Law. These fees are set by law based upon the severity of the non-compliance. Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers will be focused on protecting the existing infrastructure and results will be posted later in the year.
The Van Buren Bridge was restricted over a year ago. Our maintenance crews have observed vehicles that appear to exceed the weight limit crossing the bridge. We have asked for a focused enforcement effort to assist us in preserving the existing structure. We hope this effort will bring awareness and change driver behavior.
When weighing the vehicle, enforcement staff will review the following as defined in ORS818:
- Registered and permitted vehicle weights.
- Compliance with legal axle weights.
- Compliance with bridge axles.
Our priority for this operation is posted weight overloads. If time allows, we will check trucks for proper registration, over dimensional permits and safety violations.
Concerns can be addressed by visiting or calling the Oregon Truck Safety Hotline | 800-248-6782.
