MEDFORD —The Oregon 62 corridor is getting a ‘smart’ upgrade this year that will give drivers important information that will help keep them on the move.

Beginning this month through September, an ODOT contractor will be constructing four new Tripcheck traffic cameras and three permanent message signs at key locations in the corridor, which includes the Rogue Valley Expressway.

For most of us, it’s about staying on the move. For traffic operators, it called “ITS” – for Intelligent Transportation Systems.

“This will be a nice addition for the public and those of us who manage the Oregon 62 and Rogue Valley Expressway corridor,” said interim District Manager Jeremiah Griffin. “Cameras and sensors will help the Traffic Operations Center in Central Point spot trouble or monitor traffic back-ups due to a crash or other incident and the public will also be in the know.”

The three warning signs can be lit up with messages of either a crash ahead, a closure on the expressway, or a closure farther away, such as winter weather closures on either Oregon 140 or Oregon 62/230 near Diamond Lake and Crater Lake National Parks.

HP Civil of Salem is constructing the nearly $1.9 million project.

Putting transformative technologies like this to work is one of the outcomes in ODOT’s 2021-2023 Strategic Action Plan, aimed at creating a modern transportation system through equity and sufficient, reliable funding.
