Southern Oregon high school students, veterans connect at career fair

September 28, 2021

CANYONVILLE — More than 1,700 students from six southern Oregon counties converged on the Seven Feather Convention Center today for the third biennial Southern Oregon Trade and Career Expo.

Representatives from private and public sector employers, including ODOT, provided hands-on experience and guidance to those in attendance. The goal is to promote living wage trade and professional careers.

“It gives a lot of information to people who really aren’t sure what they want to do when they get out of high school,” said Alannah Tennis, a student Roseburg Christian Academy.

The ‘Empower the Possible’ event is aimed at high school juniors and seniors — as well as veterans, active military and families and others.

“Having this opportunity to talk to different businesses and recognize the world is a lot bigger, (students) have a lot of opportunities — and it does turn that light on for students,” said Grants Pass High School Counselor Ginger Lathen.

“This is an excellent opportunity to get exposure to living wage professional and trades career opportunities available in southern Oregon and across the state. Veteran agencies, including the Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs, look forward to matching veterans, career military and spouses with living wage career opportunities,” states Kelly Warner, Cow Creek Career Center Manager and Tribal Youth Council, Lead Advisor.
