New traffic cameras provide view of Scottsburg Bridge construction

July 20, 2021

SCOTTSBURG – There’s now an easy way to see how construction on the new Scottsburg Bridge is taking shape.

ODOT has installed a pair of TripCheck traffic cameras in Scottsburg along the north bank of the Umpqua River. One camera looks west across the work zone. The other is pointed east toward downtown Scottsburg, providing images of Oregon 38 traffic.

Photos can be seen at www.TripCheck.com or on the project website. New images are uploaded every 2-3 minutes.

If you look closely at the photos, there’s a lot going on.

Several new bridge piers can be seen near the top of the work zone photo. In the foreground, a new section of Scottsburg West Road meets Oregon 38, which curves south toward the old 1929 bridge.

The north end of the bridge will be built near the center of the photo. Prime contractor Hamilton Construction has been working to strengthen the ground through a process known as deep soil mixing, which involves digging more than a hundred holes and filling them with a concrete and soil mixture. The same process was earlier used to stabilize the south bank of the river.

Throughout July and August, more than two dozen beams will be transported to the work zone and placed on the new piers. Over the fall and winter, Hamilton will construct the bridge deck and build the north end of the bridge. When the new bridge opens to traffic next spring, the old bridge will removed.

All work on the $42 million project is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2022. The cameras will remain as a permanent feature of the new bridge, allowing travelers to check local traffic conditions.
