Paving will bring some traffic delays starting next week for Columbia Gorge and Mount Hood travelers

Projects on both U.S. 28 and I-84 may bring slowdowns

July 2, 2021

Travelers headed through the Columbia River Gorge or up to Mount Hood next week should expect delays on both Interstate 84 and U.S. 26 during lane closures for paving.

Here’s what you need to know.

Delays on I-84 between Ainsworth State Park and Cascade Locks

Next week, crews will patch small sections of rutted pavement on I-84 between Ainsworth State Park and Cascade Locks, maintaining safe pavement in the area prior to a repaving project planned for 2022.

Travelers should expect single lane closures in both directions from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, July 6-9.

U.S. 26 lane closures with both directions of traffic sharing one side of highway

Expect delays Tuesday morning through Friday morning for up to four weeks in July and August, beginning Tuesday, July 6.

Crews next week will begin paving 2.1 miles of Mount Hood Highway between Weber Road and East Cherryville Drive, east of Sandy. During this work the highway will be down to one lane in each direction, but the traffic control setup will be a little different than usual. During lane closures, both directions of U.S. 26 traffic will travel on the same side of the median.

Flaggers will be stationed at side streets to stop traffic if necessary for people turning off or onto the highway, and there is a detour for people walking, biking and rolling using Cherryville Drive and Baty Road.

This is part of a paving project that also includes replacing guardrails, upgrading median cable barrier, and replacing signs, striping and rumble strips in the area.

Travelers should expect lane closures with both directions sharing one side of the median 24/7 from midnight Tuesday morning through 9 a.m. Friday mornings.
