Siskiyou Blvd. chip seal begins June 24
 June 22, 2021
ASHLAND – A pavement improvement project on Siskiyou Boulevard (Oregon 99) between Walker Avenue and Interstate 5 kicks off Thursday, June 24. Drivers should anticipate delays and budget extra time to travel the three mile section in south Ashland.
ODOT and Jackson County crews will begin sweeping the boulevard Thursday, June 24 then transitioning to oiling and chipping the roadway beginning Monday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drivers should look for flaggers at cross streets and budget extra time due to flaggers and single lane traffic.
The $120,000 project is a typical example of the long-standing partnership between Jackson County and ODOT. County crews handle the chip seal work, while ODOT flaggers take care of traffic control.
“All of our crews work very closely together,” said ODOT Central Point Manager Steve Stone.
Chip seals are a relatively low cost way to extend the life of the road surface. As the name implies, rock chips are sealed into the roadway.
ODOT and Jackson County crews will begin the project Thursday by sweeping the boulevard. Monday, the lane will be then coated with oil. The surface is then immediately covered with rock chips. Rubber-tired rollers compact the rock into the new surface. Traffic is soon allowed onto the surface to further compact the rock into the surface.
The project is slated for completion July 6 with a pavement sealer and striping.
