The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced it will extend the waiver of medical examiner certificate requirements for certain commercial motor vehicle operators. This extension waives the requirement that qualifying drivers must file a medical examiner certificate with DMV until Aug. 31, 2021.
FMCSA has had a waiver in place since March 2020 to allow commercial driver license holders who are subject to federal rules to continue to hold commercial driving privileges with expired certificates.
These MEC waivers will be extended as follows:
- If a driver certifies a driving type of “non-excepted interstate” and their MEC was valid for a period of 90 or more days and expired on or after March 1, 2021, then a MEC emergency condition waiver will be placed on their record with an expiration date of Aug. 31, 2021.
“Non-excepted interstate” drivers whose most recent MEC expired before March 1, 2021, or was valid for a period less than 90 days do not qualify for this new waiver.
Drivers with a certified driving type of “excepted interstate” or “non-excepted intrastate,” do not qualify for this extension.
Commercial motor vehicle operators that previously qualified for a waiver but do not qualify for the extension will receive a notice of cancellation advising them that their commercial driving privilege will be cancelled if they do not provide DMV with a new MEC.
DMV will continue to process medical examiner certificates as they are received and encourages drivers to obtain and file a new MEC when possible.
